ITR 2 refund time ! Income Tax Refund delay
While ITR-2 refunds typically take 20 to 45 days after e-verification, there is no guaranteed timeline, and processing can be delayed. The Income Tax Department has been performing increased scrutiny, especially for more complex returns like ITR-2, which can extend the processing time. For simple cases, some taxpayers have even received their refund in as little as two to five weeks.
Last date to process ITR of AY 2025-26 by Income Tax department is 31st December 2026.
Common reasons for refund delays:
- Incorrect details: Mistakes in bank account information (account number, IFSC code) or a name mismatch between your PAN and bank account.
- Missing or mismatched data: Discrepancies between the data you provided in your ITR and records available with the Income Tax Department (such as in AIS, TIS, or Form 26AS).
- Large refund amount: Refunds over Rs 50,000 may trigger additional verification, which can lead to delays.
- Older tax dues: The department may adjust your refund against any past outstanding tax demands.
- Pending e-verification: Your return will not be processed until it is e-verified.
How to check your refund status:
- Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal and log in using your user ID (PAN/Aadhaar number) and password.
- Go to ‘e-File’ > ‘Income Tax Returns’ > ‘View Filed Returns’.
- Click on ‘View Details’ for the relevant assessment year to check the status of your refund.
