FORM NO. 168
[See rule 245]
Annual Information Statement
Under the new Income-tax Rules, 2026, Form No. 168 replaces the old Form 26AS / Annual Information Statement (AIS). It is governed by Section 510 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, and Rule 245 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026.
Here are all the key points regarding Form 168:
1. Purpose of the Form Form 168 is a comprehensive Annual Information Statement (AIS) that reflects all tax-related and specified financial transactions linked to a taxpayer’s PAN. It is designed to ensure transparency, data accuracy, and ease of compliance. It consolidates information regarding:
- Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS).
- Payment of advance tax, self-assessment tax, and regular taxes.
- Specified Financial Transactions (SFTs).
- Details of income tax demands and refunds.
- The status of pending and completed tax proceedings.
2. Applicability (Who Files It)
- Not Filed by the Taxpayer: Taxpayers do not manually fill out or file Form 168.
- Auto-Generated: The form is automatically generated by the Income-tax Department (specifically by the Principal Director General of Income-tax Systems, Director General of Income-tax Systems, or their authorized persons). It is then uploaded and made directly available in the taxpayer’s registered e-filing account.
3. Frequency and Due Dates
- No Fixed Due Date: Because it is not filed by the taxpayer, it does not have a specific statutory due date or fixed frequency.
- Real-Time Updates: It is dynamically updated in real-time throughout the year as the underlying TDS/TCS returns, SFT statements, and tax payment challans are filed and processed by the respective entities and the department.
4. Data Sources for Form 168 The Income-tax Department compiles the data for Form 168 from multiple reporting sources:
- TDS/TCS Returns: Data submitted by deductors and collectors via quarterly returns.
- Tax Payments: Records from challans (OLTAS/online payments).
- SFT Information: Financial data reported by banks, mutual funds, registrars, and other financial entities.
- Internal Modules: Refund and demand data pulled from the CPC-ITR module, and proceedings information pulled from Assessment Units.
5. Structure of the Form The statement is divided into two main sections:
- Part A (Particulars of the Person): Displays the taxpayer’s full Name, Date of Birth/Incorporation, structured Address, PAN, Email ID, and Contact Number.
- Part B (Nature of Information): Displays the actual financial data categorized into separate sections for TDS/TCS, SFTs, tax payments, demands/refunds, and pending/completed proceedings.
6. Importance and Outcomes
- For the Taxpayer: It gives access to a consolidated statement of all tax credits and high-value transactions. This enables accurate filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR) and helps taxpayers quickly spot and correct any mismatches with their deductors or banks.
- For the Department: It acts as a single, verified repository of taxpayer data, allowing the department to provide pre-filled ITRs, conduct cross-verifications, monitor compliance, and reduce disputes related to tax credit claims.
7. Key Updates in the 2026 Rules Because the AIS system was recently modernized, Form 168 retains the core structure of the previous AIS but introduces minor textual and formatting refinements. Most notably, the header terminology has been changed from “Financial Year” (or Assessment Year) to “Tax Year” to maintain strict uniformity across the new Income-tax Act, 2025 framework.
