How to check GST number is regular or composition

To check if a GST number (GSTIN) is under the Regular or Composition scheme, you can use the official government portal or inspect the business’s physical signage and invoices.

1. Official GST Portal (Recommended)

This is the most reliable method and does not require a login.
  • Step 1: Visit the official GST Search Taxpayer page.
  • Step 2: Enter the 15-digit GSTIN and the Captcha code.
  • Step 3: Click Search.
  • Step 4: Look for the “Taxpayer Type” field in the results. It will explicitly state “Regular” or “Composition”.

2. Check the Invoice/Bill [10]

A Composition dealer has specific legal requirements for their billing documents:
  • Bill of Supply: Instead of a “Tax Invoice,” they must issue a “Bill of Supply”.
  • Mandatory Text: The top of the bill must state: “Composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies”.
  • No Tax Charged: If you see a GST amount (CGST/SGST/IGST) calculated on the bill, the seller is likely a Regular taxpayer. Composition dealers are strictly forbidden from collecting GST from customers.

3. Physical Signboard

By law, Composition dealers must display the words “Composition taxable person” on every notice or signboard at their principal and additional places of business.

4. Verify by GSTIN Structure (Internal Code)

While not a 100% guarantee (as status can change), the 14th character of a GSTIN often indicates the registration category:
  • ‘Z’: Typically used for Regular taxpayers.
  • ‘F’: Sometimes used to denote the Composition Scheme in certain system classifications, though ‘Z’ is currently the default placeholder for most.
