How to get BSR code of bank

To get the BSR (Basic Statistical Return) code for a bank branch in India, you can use several official online and offline methods. This 7-digit code is primarily used for tax payments (TDS/TCS) and pension tracking.

1. Online Methods

  • Official Bank Website: Most major banks provide a “Branch Locator” tool where you can search by city or branch name to find the BSR code along with the IFSC and MICR codes.
  • NSDL (Protean) Website: Use the Challan Status Enquiry on the official Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL) website to search for branch-specific BSR codes.
  • Income Tax Portal: The e-filing portal often auto-populates the BSR code when you select your bank and branch during the tax payment process.
  • CPAO Directory: For pension-related queries, the Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) maintains a comprehensive directory of bank-wise BSR codes.

2. Check Official Documents

  • Bank Passbook or Statement: The BSR code is often printed on the first page of your passbook or in the header of your account statement, usually near the branch address.
  • Cheque Book: Look at your cheque leaves; many banks print the BSR code in the upper left corner or near the bank’s address.
  • Previous Tax Challans: If you have paid taxes before, the BSR code is the first 7 digits of the 20-digit Challan Identification Number (CIN) printed on your receipt.
  • TDS Certificates (Form 16/16A): The BSR code of the branch where the tax was deposited is mandatory on these certificates.

3. Direct Contact

  • Visit the Branch: You can directly ask bank officials at the customer service desk for the branch’s 7-digit BSR code.
  • Customer Care: Call your bank’s toll-free helpline. They can provide the code after verifying your identity.

Key Structure of BSR Code

  • First 3 Digits: Identify the specific bank (e.g., 001 for SBI).
  • Last 4 Digits: Identify the specific branch of that bank.
