How to Reset Password?

  • Purpose [00:03]: This video demonstrates how to reset your e-filing portal password if you forget it or don’t know it for any reason.
  • Three Methods to Reset Password [00:16]:
    1. Using OTP on Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
    2. Using OTPs on mobile number and email ID registered with the e-filing portal.
    3. Using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).

Method 1: Resetting Password Using OTP on Aadhaar-Registered Mobile Number

  • Prerequisites [00:38]:
    • For Individual Taxpayers: Your PAN must be linked to Aadhaar.
    • For Taxpayers other than Individuals (excluding Company and HUF): The PAN of the principal contact person must be linked to Aadhaar.
  • Steps [01:35]:
    1. Go to the e-filing portal and enter your User ID (typically PAN for individuals, or Aadhaar for others). For CAs, Tax Deductors/Collectors, or e-Return Intermediaries, specific User IDs apply.
    2. Click “Forgot Password” [02:00].
    3. Enter your User ID again and click “Continue”.
    4. Select the option to reset password using “OTP on Aadhaar-registered mobile number” and click “Continue” [02:13].
    5. If you have an OTP, check that radio button. Otherwise, click “Generate OTP” and then “Continue” [02:25].
    6. Agree to verify your Aadhaar details and click “Generate Aadhaar OTP” [02:36].
    7. Enter the six-digit OTP received on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number and click “Verify”.
    8. After verification, set your new password and confirm it. Then click “Submit”.
    9. Password Policy [03:01]: The new password must be 8-14 characters long, include both uppercase and lowercase letters, at least one number, and one special character.
    10. A success message with a transaction ID will be displayed. Note it for future reference.

Method 2: Resetting Password Using OTPs on E-filing Registered Mobile Number and Email ID

  • Prerequisites [00:58]: Access to your primary email ID and mobile number registered with the e-filing portal.
  • Steps [03:25]:
    1. On the password reset options page, select “e-Filing OTP” and click “Continue”.
    2. For identity verification, enter your date of birth or date of incorporation and click “Continue”.
    3. You will receive separate OTPs on your mobile number and email ID registered with the e-filing portal.
    4. Enter both the mobile OTP and email OTP and click “Verify”.
    5. After verification, set your new password and confirm it. Then click “Submit”.
    6. The password rules are the same as above. A success message with a transaction ID will be displayed.

Method 3: Resetting Password Using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

  • Prerequisites [01:12]:
    • A Category 2 or Category 3 DSC obtained from a certifying authority.
    • The DSC must be plugged into your computer, valid, and active.
    • The M-Signer Utility must be downloaded and installed.
  • Steps [04:09]:
    1. On the password reset options page, select the option to upload a Digital Signature Certificate and click “Continue”.
    2. You will need to upload an active Level 2 or above DSC approved by the certifying authority.
    3. Choose either “New DSC” or “Registered DSC”. If your DSC is already registered on the e-filing portal, select “Registered DSC” [04:30].
    4. Check the box confirming you have downloaded the M-Signer Utility and click “Continue”. (If not, you can click to download it).
    5. Select your DSC details and click “Sign”.
    6. Now, set your new password and confirm it. Then click “Submit”.
    7. Important Note [05:03]: The new password cannot be the same as any of the previous three passwords. Always use a new password.
    8. A success message with a transaction ID will be displayed.
