Online PAN Verification through Income Tax Website

By using the Online PAN Verification facility, one can know/verify the Permanent Account Number (PAN). This facility is referred to as “PAN Verification” or “Know Your PAN”.​

Option – I Verification of One PAN at a time

Step-1

Visit https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and login

Step-2

Please Login and navigate to Profile Settings -> My Profile to view the details.

Option – II Bulk PAN Verification – For Government and non- Government agencies

Step-1

Register as a Bulk PAN Verification Agency at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

Step-2

Go to Bulk PAN Query and click on Upload Query

Step-3

Upload the query in the specified format and click on submit

Step-4

On submission a token number will be generated.

Step-5

Status of the PAN uploaded through the query system will be displayed

Option – III On-line PAN Verification – For approved Government and non-Government agencies on ‘User pays’ model.

This facility is on chargeable basis.

Under this facility, PAN verification is Screen based, File based and Software(API i.e.Server to Server talk) based. For further information website of NSDL i.e.https://www.tin-nsdl.com/ or UTIITSL i.e. https://www.myutiitsl.com/pan_dcs/login.jsp may be referred to.

Online PAN Verification through NSDL

To enable eligible Entities verify Permanent Account Numbers (PANs), Income Tax Department (ITD) has authorized NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited (NSDL e-Gov) to launch an online PAN verification service for verification of PANs by authorized entities.

Charges – Details

  • The registration charges are ₹12,000 p.a. plus Goods and Services Tax (GST).
  • This facility is provided for one year and the same needs to be renewed on yearly basis.
  • Annual renewal charges are ₹12,000 p.a. plus Goods and Services Tax (GST).
  • PANs verified through file upload under ‘File and Screen Based’ facility are chargeable.
  • The entity availing ‘File and Screen Based’ or ‘API Based’ facility has to maintain sufficient advance against its user ID in order to verify PANs which are more than the free limit of PANs per day.
  • The registration charges are non-refundable. Only in case where the registration is rejected by Income Tax Department, the registration charges will be refunded.

Concessional rates for volume based PAN verification during a Financial Year (effective 1st January 2012)

If an entity verifies PANs during a financial year as per below mentioned slabs, either through File or API based facility, additional benefit of increase in the limit of free PANs per day (screen based) and concessional rate of PAN verification is offered.

Note :-

  1. The adjusted amount on per PAN verification and free usage (PAN verified through screen based) shall be adjusted.

e.g.: If an entity verifies 13 Lakhs PANs during a financial year through ‘Screen and File Based’ type, it falls in the category of > 7.5 Lakhs ≦ 15 Lakhs as mentioned in the above table. It will get the benefit of 1000 free PANs per day and revised rate of 25 Paisa for PAN verification. Benefit of increase in the limit of free PANs per day is applicable only if the PANs are verified through Screen based in the category of “Screen and File based facility”. The above charges are applicable for PANs verified through ‘Screen and File Based’ or ‘API based’ facility only. The annual registration fees would remain the same as before.

Pre-requisite – Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

1) Document Signer Certificate – Issued in soft format i.e. pfx format

2) Digital Signature Certificate – Issued in physical format i.e. e-token (hardware device)

  • The digital certificate must be in the name of the applicant. An authorisation letter by the applicant should be provided on the letterhead of the applicant to NSDL e-Gov.

Procedure

  • Entity desirous of availing the facility for online PAN verification has to register with NSDL e-Gov. For this, the entity should forward the following documents to NSDL e-Gov:
    • Signed copy of the Terms & Conditions should be provided on the letterhead of the Entity
    • Demand Draft/ Cheque (subject to realization) for applicable Charges
    • Authorisation letter

Payment Details

  • The registration charges are ₹ 12,000 p.a. plus Goods and Services Tax (GST).
  • This facility is provided for one year and the same needs to be renewed on yearly basis.
  • PANs verified through file upload under ‘File and Screen Based’ facility are chargeable.
  • The entity availing ‘File and Screen Based’ or ‘API Based’ facility has to maintain sufficient deposit against its user ID in order to verify PANs which are more than the free limit of PANs per day.
  • Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be applicable on all the above charges.
  • Payment can be made either by demand draft or cheque.
  • Demand draft / cheque shall be in favour of ‘NSDL – TIN’.
  • Demand draft shall be payable at Mumbai (to be sent to NSDL e-Gov).
  • Acknowledgement number and name of entity should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft / Cheque.
  • Entity shall select appropriate mode of payment and fill relevant details during registration

Apply Registration Online

Procedure for change of DSC

To change Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) details, the organization need to follow below procedure *.

1) Login with user ID using existing Digital Signature Certificate.

2) Go to ‘Change DSC details’ option

3) Fill the required details of the DSC, which needs to be mapped with your user ID.

4) Select the renewed/Changed DSC.

*Note:- Existing DSC and the DSC which needs to be changed is required to be installed in the machine before following the above procedure.
If current DSC is expired, the following documents are required for change of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC):

Superscribe the envelope with ‘Change of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for Online PAN Verification’.

Procedure for Renewal of PAN Verification Facility

The facility for online PAN verification is provided for one year and same needs to be renewed on a yearly basis where the annual renewal charge is 12,000 (plus Goods and Services Tax (GST) as applicable).

A. Prior email intimation for renewal due

One month in advance, a system-generated email intimating the renewal due and the procedure to be followed to renew the PAN verification facility will be sent on registered email ID of the entity.

B. Time Period to renew facility

The facility can be renewed sixty days in advance from the expiry date of PAN Verification facility. The payment can be made through Cheque/DD/NEFT.

C. Steps to be followed for renewal

a) Raise renewal request online as per below steps:-

  • Login with user ID using Digital Signature Certificate
  • Go to ‘Payment’ option
  • Select ‘Renewal of Facility’ option
  • Fill up payment details and click on ‘Submit’ button

b) In case payment is made through Cheque or Demand Draft, forward payment instrument on the below address. Payment instrument drawn should be in favour of ‘NSDL-TIN’

E. Email intimation for renewal done

A system-generated email for the facility renewed along with the payment details and the validity period will be sent on registered email ID of the entity once the online renewal request is authorized by NSDL e-Gov.

Registration Status Track

The organisation can enquire the status of its registration on the basis of its acknowledgment number. On successful registration a screen displaying status as accepted along with a user ID will be displayed, if registration is rejected status displayed will be rejected.

Status of Organisation Registration

Authorisation

Registration of an Entity is subject to approval by Income Tax department (ITD).

NSDL e-Gov will forward the registration request of the Entity to ITD only on receipt of the required documents, realisation of payment, successful verification of TAN / PAN details (details mentioned in registration with TAN/ PAN master), DSC details.

On successful authorization, an eight digit user ID will be provided to the Entity. Authorisation status and details will be communicated by email.

The registration charges will be refunded only if ITD rejects the registration request.

Procedure for upload of file

  • Online PAN verification facility is available only for those entities who have been duly authorised by NSDL e-Gov.
  • The user will login to the TIN central system by signing with the DSC associated with it. On authentication of the DSC, the user will get access to the online upload system.
  • If DSC authentication fails the PAN details will not be shown.

In online PAN verification facility two options have been provided to the user. User will have to take care of following points related to these options:

File Based Bulk Verification

  • Input file should be prepared as per the prescribed file format, for Department of Commercial Taxes separate file format.
  • The length of the filename should not be more than twelve characters (Including extension). The filename can be alphanumeric. No special characters are allowed in the file name (e.g. name of the file can be: NSDLPAN.txt).
  • After successful login, the user will select File Upload from the main menu and upload the input file online by digitally signing the upload.
  • The DSC will be authenticated by NSDL e-Gov. On successful authentication the file will be uploaded and a file reference number will be generated.
  • The status of the file uploaded and the output can be viewed / downloaded by selecting File Status from the main menu.

Procedure for Advance Addition

Background

The entity availing ‘File and Screen Based ‘or ‘API Based’ facility has to provide advance amount to NSDL e-Gov in order to verify PANs which are more than the free limit as applicable. For this, User has to raise an online advance request. Advance amount added gets replenished as and when PANs are verified online beyond free limit applicable or as and when file is uploaded in case of File based facility. There is no limit for how much advance amount is to be added. Based on the volume, User can add desired advance amount in its user ID.

A. Steps to be followed for addition of advance amount

a) Raise addition of advance amount request online as per below steps:-

  • Login with user ID using Digital Signature Certificate
  • Go to ‘Payment’ option
  • Select ‘Advance Amount’ option
  • Fill up payment details and click on ‘Submit’ button

b) Forward payment instrument on the below address, if the payment is to be made through Cheque or Demand Draft. Payment instrument drawn should be in favour of ‘NSDL-TIN’

What is Online PAN Verification facility?

To enable entities to verify Permanent Account Numbers (PANs), Income Tax Department (ITD) has authorized NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited (NSDL e-Gov) to provide an online PAN verification service for verification of PANs to eligible entities. Three types of facilities are available for PAN Verification facility. Based on the requirement, entities can avail any facility.

Which three types of facilities are available for PAN Verification facility?
  1. Screen based Verification:

    The users, after login, can furnish up to a maximum of five PANs in the screen provided. The PANs may be entered in the boxes provided in the screen. The response giving details of PAN will be displayed in the response screen.

  2. File and Screen based Verification:

    The users, after login, can upload a file containing maximum of 1000 PANs (file structure as specified by NSDL e-Gov). In case, file format is incorrect, the system will convey the rejection. The entity can download response regarding acceptance/rejection of file at his convenience up to 10 days.

  3. Software (API) based PAN verification:

    The facility is an interface that allows the user to make an online verification of PAN by accessing the verification-site through a software application.

How can I avail this facility?

Entity desirous of availing online PAN verification facility has to “ register ” online with NSDL e-Gov. After receipt of documents and requisite fees, the application will be forwarded to Income Tax Department (ITD) for approval. Upon receipt of approval from ITD, user ID will be created and communicated to an entity via email mentioned at the time of making online application.

Can I make application to avail Online PAN Verification facility on plain paper?

No. To avail Online PAN Verification facility, you have to register online.

How much time is required to get approval from ITD?

It is at the discretion of ITD.

Will I get refund in case my application is rejected by ITD?

Yes. In case the application is rejected by ITD, the registration charges will be refunded.

Will I get refund in case my application is approved by ITD and I do not want to avail online PAN verification facility due to some reason?

No. Once the approval is received from ITD and user ID is created, you will not get refund of fees paid by you.

How long this facility is available?

The facility for online PAN verification is provided for one year and same needs to be renewed on a yearly basis where the annual renewal charge is 12,000 (plus Goods and Services Tax) as applicable.

With effect from January 1, 2012, Online PAN Verification is now charged at concessional rate where cumulative count of PANs verified exceeds more than 7.5 Lakhs PAN in a financial year.

What are the details which will be displayed when I verify PANs?

a) In case of valid PAN, “name of the PAN holder”, “last date of PAN update as per ITD database” and the status as “existing and valid” will be displayed. 
b) If the PAN is a fake PAN as per ITD database, the status will be shown as “Fake PAN”. 
c) In case PAN is not found in database, the response will be “Not in ITD database”. In such cases, if the user is able to provide a proof of this PAN (copy of PAN card or PAN allotment letter), NSDL e-Gov will forward the same to ITD for investigation. 
d) In case where category of user is “Department of Commercial Taxes”, for a valid PAN, “Name of the PAN holder”, “Date of Birth”, “Father’s name” and “Last date of PAN update as per ITD database” and the status as “existing and valid” will be displayed.

Can I come to know contact number/address details of the PAN holder by availing online PAN Verification facility?

No. Only the following fields are displayed after verification of PANs 

a) PAN holder Name 
b) Last update of PAN 
c) Status of PAN (Valid/Invalid/not present in ITD database) 

For “Department of Commercial Taxes” category, in addition to the above fields Father Name and Date of Birth will be displayed.

I want to change type of facility (Screen/File/API based) of Online PAN Verification facility?

For this, you need to forward a written request on the letterhead of your organization duly signed by the authorized signatory mentioning your user ID.

My organization name has changed. How do I inform you?

For this, you need to forward a written request on the letterhead of your organization duly signed by authorized signatory mentioning your user ID. You are also required to forward us the requisite documentary proof showing change in the name of organisation.

Can I use Online PAN Verification facility for the purpose other than the purpose mentioned at the time of registration?

No, you cannot use Online PAN Verification facility other than the purpose mentioned for availing Online PAN Verification facility. Income Tax Department carries out quarterly audit of PANs verified by the entities. If it is observed that the facility is being used other than the purpose for which it is availed, your facility may get discontinued.

Authorised person/Contact details/Address/E-mail of our organization has been changed. What should I do?

Can I verify TAN using Online PAN Verification facility?

No. At present this facility is not available. However, you can verify TAN at Income Tax website at 

https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/KnowTan.do

Is multiple log-in allowed?

No. Multiple log-in is not allowed.

Do you provide any alerts to users who avail Online PAN Verification facility?

NSDL e-Gov do provide alerts to its PAN verification users through email and SMS

Email alerts are provided on your registered email ID under the below scenarios:- 

a) Acknowledgement email for registration made 
b) Intimation of creation of user ID and payment advice for payment made 
c) Intimation of rejection of registration with rejection reason 
d) Intimation of addition of advance amount in its PAN verification account along with payment advice 
e) Intimation for facility due for renewal one month in advance 
f) Intimation of renewal of facility along with payment advice for payment made 
g) Intimation for Due date of expiry of Digital Signature Certificate in advance 
h) Intimation for DSC update 
i) Email alert for insufficient balance in your PAN verification account 

SMS alert is also send on your mobile number registered for ‘Quick Alert’ facility for insufficient balance in your PAN verification account

How is the communication sent on creation of user ID?

You will receive an email regarding User ID and payment made by you towards registration on your registered email ID present with NSDL e-Gov.

Where to contact in case of any problem / clarification required on PAN verification facility?

The user can call on 022-24994182 or send their grievances/queries to the email ID at . The user can also address their grievances/queries at the following address mentioning acknowledgment number or user ID (if applicable) for our reference :-

Is it compulsory to have Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

Yes, to avail Online PAN Verification facility, Digital Signature Certificate is compulsory. DSC is required for making registration and verifying PANs online.

Which Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is required for making online registration?

The list of DSC which can be used for making online registration is available at https://www.tin-nsdl.com/pan-verify/pan-verification-prerequisite.php .

Which class of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is required for Online PAN Verification facility?

The entity must have a Digital Signature Certificate (Class II or Class III) from any of the licensed Certifying Authorities available athttps://www.tin-nsdl.com/pan-verify/pan-verification-prerequisite.php .

Do you provide Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

No. We do not provide Digital Signature Certificate. The Digital Signature Certificate can be procured from any of the Certifying Authorities / Sub-Certifying Authorities. The list is available athttps://www.tin-nsdl.com/pan-verify/pan-verification-prerequisite.php .

What if, if I do not have Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) which is not present in your list?

In such a case, you need to procure DSC from Certifying Authorities / Sub-Certifying Authorities from list of DSC which is available athttps://www.tin-nsdl.com/pan-verify/pan-verification-prerequisite.php .

Can I use another Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for verifying PANs other than which was mentioned for making online registration?

Yes, you can use another DSC for verifying PANs other than mentioned at the time of making online registration. But first new DSC details needs to be updated against user ID by forwarding us the following documents.

a) DSC change request cum Authorisation letter 
b) Screen shots of new DSC 

Go to Internet explorer – Tools – Internet Options – Contents – Certificates – Personal Tab and view certificate by double clicking it. Then take below screen shots.

Who is eligible to make advance payment?

Entity that has opted for File or API based facility is required to make advance payment.

How can I make advance payment?

To raise advance request online, please follow the instructions given below :-

a) Login with your user ID 
b) Go to ‘Payment’ option 
c) Select ‘Advance Payment’ option 
d) Fill up payment details and click on ‘Submit’ button.

Will my facility be stopped if I do not have funds in my advance account?

In case you have no funds lying in your account, you will be able to log-in your account, but you will not be able to verify PANs. In case you have opted for File based facility, you will be able to verify 750 PANs per day per user ID free of cost through screen based option. In case, you have opted for API based facility, you will be able to verify 750 PANs per day free of cost. Beyond 750 PANs, you will not be able to verify PANs.

To continue verifying PANs, you need to raise online advance request and forward us Cheque or Demand Draft drawn in favour of ‘NSDL-TIN’. Alternatively, you can also make online transfer of advance payment to the NSDL e-Gov account.

Will I receive any intimation for advance amount added in my PAN verification account?

Yes, you will receive system-generated email for the advance amount added in your account along with the payment details once the transaction is authorized by NSDL e-Gov.

What are the renewal charges?

The facility for online PAN verification is provided for one year and same needs to be renewed on a yearly basis where the annual renewal charge is  12,000 (plus Goods and Services Tax as applicable).

My Online PAN Verification facility is expired. How do I renew it?

You can renew the facility sixty days in advance from the expiry date of Online PAN Verification facility. For this, you need to raise renewal request online. Please follow the instructions given below :-

a) Login with your user ID using Digital Signature Certificate 
b) Go to ‘Payment’ option 
c) Select ‘Renewal of Facility’ option 
d) Fill up payment details and click on ‘Submit’ button

Yes, you will receive system-generated email one month in advance intimating the renewal due and the procedure to be followed to renew the PAN verification facility.

Will I receive any intimation that PAN verification facility has been renewed?

Yes, you will receive system-generated email for the facility renewed along with the payment details, along with validity period once the transaction is authorized by NSDL e-Gov.
