Out of everything happening in your brain right now, only a tiny fraction is consciously accessible — thoughts you can describe, hold in mind, and reason with. We found a strikingly similar divide inside our AI model, Claude.

Our experiments were inspired by a leading theory in neuroscience: the global workspace theory. It holds that a thought becomes consciously accessible when it enters a shared “workspace” that’s broadcast across the brain. We found a set of representations in Claude’s neural activity that play a similar role.

- High (~16,000 – 32,000 tokens): Gives Claude enhanced reasoning for complex, multi-step tasks. It is great for architectural decisions, intricate debugging, and policy-heavy workflows. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Max/Ultra Code (32,000+ tokens): Reserves the highest computational budget. It allows Claude to consider multiple solution approaches and trace difficult edge cases, though it consumes more of your usage limits. [1, 2, 3]

For more specific use cases, Claude also supports an Adaptive mode. In this mode, Claude dynamically evaluates the complexity of your prompt and determines the appropriate depth of thinking on its own. [1]
