Expanded language support for Gemini in Google Docs

Earlier this year, we introduced new Gemini in Google Docs capabilities that help you move from a blank page to a finished document faster than ever.

We are now expanding support for these features to 11 more languages, including Mandarin, Dutch, Malay, Hebrew, Polish, Turkish, Czech, Indonesian, Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian. These new additions join our previously supported languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, French, Korean, German, and Italian.

Reimagined Gemini experience in Docs

With this update, Google Docs offers a centralized place to generate, write, and refine your documents with Gemini. Powered by Workspace Intelligence, Gemini leverages data across Drive, Gmail, Chat, and the web to provide personalized, context-aware assistance.

The upgraded Help me create experience enables you to generate relevant, fully formatted first drafts that synthesize information from your files, emails, chat, and the web.
With Help me write, simply prompt Gemini from the bottom bar or side panel to make edits across your doc, or select text to focus Gemini’s attention. Gemini’s suggested edits are only visible to you until you approve them.
Match writing style helps maintain a consistent tone and style across your entire doc, no matter how many people are working on it.
With Match doc format, Gemini can mirror a source document to generate content that adheres to the original’s formatting (e.g., fonts and colors) and structural elements (e.g., headings and table columns).

To generate new docs from scratch, open a new doc, enter your prompt, and click submit. To edit existing docs, simply hover over the spark near the bottom of your doc and type a prompt in the bottom bar.

Getting started

Admins: These features are available by default if Gemini for Workspace in Drive is enabled. Note that enabling Workspace Intelligence expands the range of supported use cases.
End users: You must have Workspace smart features enabled to use these features. Visit the Help Center to learn more about creating personalized documents with Gemini in Google Docs.

To take full advantage of context-aware document generation, users should ensure the Workspace Intelligence setting is enabled in their Google Workspace Admin Console or individual smart features settings. [1, 2]

Gemini: Your always-on AI assistant in Docs

We are introducing the ability to set custom, persistent instructions for Gemini in Google Docs. These instructions ensure that Gemini adapts to your style, tone, and formatting preferences without needing to repeat them in every conversation, ultimately saving you time and ensuring consistency.

Users can add instructions and rules using Gemini in the side panel of Docs such as “Always respond in bullet points,” “When summarizing Docs, always include a 3 bullet points at the top.”” or “Use a concise and professional tone for all my documents.”

Note that users are currently limited to 1000 active instructions.

Getting started

Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
End users: Get started by opening the side panel in Gemini in Docs and requesting Gemini to store a specific instruction. Visit the Help Center to learn more about customizing Gemini in Workspace’s responses with your instructions.

Format Conversion: It can transform mixed inputs—like a photo of a whiteboard, a CSV of raw data, and a few handwritten notes—into a polished, shareable business report or a LaTeX document.

2. Contextual “Sources” & Smart Canvas

Gemini now acts as a bridge between all your Workspace data.

The @ Menu for Context: You can type @ to tag specific files in your Drive or emails in your Gmail as sources. For example: “Update the project timeline in this doc based on @LatestMeetingNotes and @StatusUpdateEmail.”
Research & Synthesis: Within the side panel, Gemini can scan your entire Drive to answer questions like, “What are the recurring themes across our last five Q3 strategy docs?” and then draft a summary directly into your current page.

Match Writing Style: Using a feature called “Personal Intelligence,” you can ask Gemini to analyze a previous document you wrote and then apply that specific voice, tone, and formatting to a new draft.
Fill with Gemini: Inside tables, Gemini can now auto-populate data. If you have a column for “Company Name” and another for “Latest News,” Gemini can crawl the web and fill the entire table for you.

4. Enterprise Agentic Features

For those using the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (the successor to Vertex AI), Docs integration has become even more advanced:

Multi-Step Agents: You can set up agents that “watch” a document. When you add a new client name to a list, the agent can automatically generate a customized welcome letter and save it to a specific folder.
Model Switching: Enterprise users can toggle between different models (like Gemini 3 Flash for speed or Pro for deep reasoning) directly from the Docs sidebar.
