where to see income tax notice
An income tax notice in India can be viewed online on the official e-filing portal and may also be received via email and post
Online on the e-filing portal
The most reliable way to check for a notice is to log in to the Income Tax Department’s official e-filing portal and navigate to the following sections:
- e-Proceedings: Go to
Pending Actions > e-Proceedings. This is where you can view and respond to all notices and letters issued by the department. - Worklist: Check
Pending Actions > Worklistfor any actions that you need to take. - View Filed Returns: For intimations related to a specific return, go to
e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns. You can download the intimation order from this section. - Response to Outstanding Demand: If the notice concerns an outstanding tax demand, you can view it under
Pending Actions > Respond to Outstanding Demand
By email
The Income Tax Department also sends intimations and notices to the email address registered on your e-filing profile.
- Check your registered email address for any communications from the department.
- Be cautious of fraudulent emails; official emails from the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) will come from
intimations@cpc.gov.in
By post
In some cases, especially if you filed a physical return or don’t respond to the email notice in time, the department may send a physical copy of the notice via registered post to the address registered with your PAN
How to verify a notice
To confirm a notice is genuine and not a scam, you can authenticate it using the e-filing portal’s “Authenticate Notice/Order issued by ITD” feature under the “Quick Links” section on the homepage. You will need the Document Identification Number (DIN) from the notice to verify its authenticity.
