Google Translate rolls out new upgrades for iOS and Android.

Google Translate’s live translate brings natural, near-real time audio translations to 70+ languages. Today, we’re introducing two updates to make translations even more seamless.

First, because more than a third of live translation sessions now last longer than five minutes, Android users can now keep live translations running in the background. This is perfect for longer sessions where you need to multitask or want to lock your phone screen. iOS support is coming soon.

Second, iOS users worldwide can now get live translations directly through their phone’s earpiece. (The feature is already available on Android.) When you don’t have headphones handy, just hold your phone to your ear. It’s great for catching announcements at noisy airports or following along on crowded tours.

Google Translate’s latest updates: (Left) On Android, you can now keep live translations running while you’re multitasking or with the screen locked. (Right) iOS users worldwide can now get live translations directly through their phone’s earpiece.

Google recently rolled out major upgrades to Google Translate’s “Live Translate” feature, targeting seamless, multitasking, and real-time audio translations across both iOS and Android platforms. The updates address the shifting ways people use the app, particularly noting that over a third of live translation sessions now stretch past five minutes. [1]

📱 Key Upgrades by Platform

  • Android (Background Translation): Android users can now keep live translations running in the background. This allows you to lock your screen or switch to other applications without interrupting the audio translation session—making it much easier to multitask during long conversations or lectures. Google has confirmed that iOS support for background translation is coming soon. [1, 2]
  • iOS (Earpiece Playback): iPhone users worldwide can now listen to live translations directly through their phone’s earpiece, a capability that was already present on Android. When you don’t have headphones plugged in, you can simply hold the phone to your ear like a traditional phone call. This is ideal for catching announcements in noisy airports or discreetly following along on a crowded tour. [1, 3, 4]

⚙ How to Try the New Features

  1. Update your Google Translate app to the latest version via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Open the Google Translate App.
  3. Tap on the “Live translate” button.
  4. Choose your languages and start speaking or listening (the tool currently supports near-real-time translation across more than 70 languages). [1, 3]
