Step inside 50 new digital exhibitions from Africa on Google Arts & Culture

Google Arts & Culture partners with eight leading institutions to launch 50 new stories and over 2,500 digital artifacts, adding to the celebration of Africa’s diverse history, art, and living traditions on Google Arts & Culture.

Every piece of art and historic artifact carries a meaning that connects where we come from to where we are going. Google Arts & Culture is proud to launch 50 new stories and over 2,500 new artifacts from eight leading institutions across Africa, continuing to share Africa’s diverse history to a global audience.

Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Pan-Atlantic University team setting up the Art Camera, a custom-built robotic camera

Our journey begins in Nigeria with the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, which used Google’s Art Camera — one of its first deployments on the continent — to bring over 150 stunning Nigerian masterworks into ultra-high resolution and present them in bespoke immersive virtual exhibition spaces:

Zoom into Masterpieces: Google’s Art Camera captures artworks in spectacular gigapixel detail, allowing you to get up close with legendary Nigerian art. Discover Aina Onabolu’s Yoruba nobility realist portraiture, and Diseye Tantua’s “Afro Pop Art” buses like ‘No Hurry in Life’ or ‘No Time is Late’, symbolizing the journey of life and patience. Meanwhile, Archivi.ng is democratizing history by turning forgotten vintage headlines into a searchable digital archive, while Goge Africa uses cultural advocacy to bring royal traditions and festivals to global screens. This tapestry is further enriched by South Africa’s Photography Legacy Project, which balances profound historical moments with modern township life, and the Western Cape Museums, which explore knowledge of indigenous foods. Bridging this past with tomorrow, the African Leadership Academy’s Rooted Identities sees young artists using new technology to show how ancestral roots can be a source of future innovation.

These new exhibits join thousands of stories curated by partners across Africa, including projects such as Woolaroo, the heritage of Sierra Leone with Sierra Leone’s National Museum and Magic Mali, all available through the Google Arts & Culture app for Android or iOS.

Google Arts & Culture recently launched 50 new digital exhibitions celebrating Africa’s diverse history, art, and living traditions. In partnership with eight leading African institutions, the initiative brings over 2,500 new digital artifacts and stories to a global audience, making it incredibly easy to explore the continent’s vibrant cultural tapestry from anywhere.

1. Immersive Gigapixel & Virtual Galleries (Nigeria)

The project debuts Google’s Art Camera in partnership with the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art in Nigeria.

Zoom into Masterpieces: You can explore over 150 Nigerian masterworks in ultra-high “gigapixel” resolution, capturing the minute details of legendary works like Aina Onabolu’s realist portraits, Bruce Onobrakpeya’s The Great Hunter, and Diseye Tantua’s vibrant “Afro Pop Art” buses.

African Leadership Academy (Rooted Identities): This exhibition features young African artists using cutting-edge digital technology to show how ancestral roots can serve as a catalyst for future innovation. It features compelling digital art, comic sequences (The Journey of Wonzi), and narratives that reimagine an African worldview inside the digital space.
Goge Africa: Explore the striking visuals and deep history behind the Ijele Masquerade, one of the largest and most celebrated masking traditions in Igbo culture.

Growing the next generation of American workers

Google is expanding our total support for the skilled trades, helping train 300,000 skilled workers for high-demand careers.

Building and maintaining the infrastructure for America’s future requires a massive, coordinated workforce of skilled tradespeople — from the welders and pipefitters securing complex cooling systems, to the electricians and fiber technicians powering advanced network grids. These jobs offer high-wage careers that can support local communities. There are hundreds of thousands of skilled trade roles currently open across the U.S waiting to be filled.

Today, Google is expanding our total skilled trades support to help prepare more than 300,000 American workers across more than 20 states. Through a $50 million commitment from Google.org, funding will go directly to the training experts who build these programs from the ground up. Their work will support 14 labor unions and four trade and contractor associations, ensuring workers have the state-of-the-art skills and accreditation to pursue a skilled trades career, no matter where they want to work. It also builds on funding Google has provided to help the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA) train tens of thousands of electrical workers and the Manufacturing Institute train tens of thousands of current and future manufacturing workers in essential AI skills.

Here’s how:

Construction pre-apprentices: TradesFutures, an organization created by North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) and its industry partners, will increase access to union construction careers. They’ll do this by scaling placement from apprenticeship readiness programs into registered apprenticeships across the country and integrating AI operational tools to improve graduate placement.
Electricians: Formed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), etA will assist local training programs by bringing additional resources directly to high-demand infrastructure hubs through an innovative mobile training center pilot.
Plumbers, pipefitters, welders and service techs: The United Association’s International Training Fund (ITF), which operates in partnership with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), will develop a five-year roadmap for scaling the plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration sectors, helping prepare people with the skills to build, maintain and upgrade essential infrastructure.
Sheet metal workers: Backed by the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation (SMART) Workers and Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors (SMACNA), the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry will address a critical shortage by modernizing its coursework and apprentice support while implementing new AI tools.

No single entity can solve this American workforce shortage on its own. There needs to be engagement across industry, civil society and government, so we can build modern on-the-job training and expand apprenticeships together. By supporting the training experts and trade organizations who keep America running, we’re helping build a public-private model to prepare the next generation of American builders.

We have long worked with organizations across the U.S. to train Americans for careers that create long-term opportunities for families and economic impact for their communities. Since 2022, Google has provided more than $1 billion globally in training and skilling initiatives, helping over 100 million people gain essential digital and AI skills. Google Vault now supports retention rules and litigation holds for Gemini app

Google Vault now supports retention rules and litigation holds for the Gemini app on web and mobile. Previously, administrators were able to use Vault to search Gemini app conversations and export those search results. With this update, administrators can now also create, update, and delete the following for the Gemini app:

Default retention rules: Set default retention rules for the Gemini app for a finite or indefinite retention period.
Custom retention rules: Create custom retention rules for the Gemini app by organizational unit (OU) or the entire domain for a finite or indefinite retention period.
Litigation holds: Place holds on the Gemini app data for a specific OU or a list of users.

Google Vault is an eDiscovery and information governance tool for Google Workspace that enables customers to retain, hold, search, and export users’ Google Workspace data. With this update, customers can expand their regulatory and legal eDiscovery management to include retention and holds for the Gemini app, making it easier to comply with data obligations from a central tool.

Additional details

Application scope: This update applies specifically to the Gemini app (on web and mobile) and is not applicable to Gemini in Google Workspace features integrated into other apps (such as “Help me write” in Gmail or Docs), as those specific interactions are not retained in the same manner.
Policy precedence: Vault retention rules and holds will always take precedence over Admin console settings, user deletion settings, or user activity settings.
- Example: If a user deletes a conversation or turns off their activity setting, but an active Vault hold requires retention, the data is hidden from the user but remains fully retained and visible to Vault administrators.
API support: Support for Vault API users will be available in the coming weeks.

Getting started

Admins: Visit the Help Center to learn more about using Vault to search the Gemini app, as well as supported services and data types. If active, Vault retention rules and holds will take precedence over any other Admin Console setting or user setting.
End users: There is no end-user setting for this feature.
