The document NRI-18.5 is an official State Bank of India (SBI) form designed for “Re-KYC diligence” and for the operationalization of “In-operative” NRI accounts.
1. Account Operationalization

If an account is marked as “In-operative,” the holder can request its activation by authorizing the bank to debit and credit ₹1 from the account.

In the case of joint accounts, each account holder must fill out and submit this form separately.
2. Personal and Identification Details

Status Identification: Applicants must identify as an NRI or a PIO/OCI (Person of Indian Origin/Overseas Citizen of India).

Mandatory Personal Data: The form requires the applicant’s Father’s name, Mother’s maiden name, Place of Birth, Nationality, and PAN number (or Form 60).

Passport and Visa: Detailed information regarding the passport (number, issue date, validity) and Visa/Work Permit is mandatory, except for PIO/OCI holders or specific seafarer profiles.
3. Submission Methods

In-Person: Customers visiting the branch must submit proofs of status, identity, tax residency, and addresses.

Non-Face-to-Face (Specific Countries): Customers in listed countries (e.g., USA, UK, UAE/GCC, Singapore, Australia) can submit self-attested documents and a copy of a recent overseas bank statement via registered email or post.

All Other Cases: If not in a listed country and not visiting in person, third-party attestation is mandatory. This can be done by an SBI Foreign Office, Indian Embassy/High Commission, or a Notary Public.
4. Documentary Requirements
The form categorizes required documents into specific groups:

Proof of Status (A): Valid Visa/Work Permit for NRIs; PIO/OCI card or proof of Indian origin for PIOs/OCIs.

Proof of Identity (B): Relevant pages of the applicant’s passport.

Proof of Tax Residency (C): A document mentioning the Tax Identification Number (TIN) or a certificate of residence issued by a government body.

Current Overseas Address (D): Passport pages with the address, a utility bill, or an overseas bank statement.

Permanent Address (E): For NRIs, this can be a Voter ID, Aadhaar Card, or Driving License.
5. Regulatory Declarations (FATCA/CRS)

The applicant must certify their tax status under the Income-tax Act, 1961 and RBI guidelines.

The bank is authorized to report account details to the CBDT or other government agencies to comply with FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and CRS (Common Reporting Standard) obligations.

Holders must notify the bank of any changes to their tax residency or personal information within 30 days.
