The document NRI-18.5 is an official State Bank of India (SBI) form designed for “Re-KYC diligence” and for the operationalization of “In-operative” NRI accounts.

1. Account Operationalization

  • If an account is marked as “In-operative,” the holder can request its activation by authorizing the bank to debit and credit ₹1 from the account.

  • In the case of joint accounts, each account holder must fill out and submit this form separately.

2. Personal and Identification Details

  • Status Identification: Applicants must identify as an NRI or a PIO/OCI (Person of Indian Origin/Overseas Citizen of India).

  • Mandatory Personal Data: The form requires the applicant’s Father’s name, Mother’s maiden name, Place of Birth, Nationality, and PAN number (or Form 60).

  • Passport and Visa: Detailed information regarding the passport (number, issue date, validity) and Visa/Work Permit is mandatory, except for PIO/OCI holders or specific seafarer profiles.

3. Submission Methods

  • In-Person: Customers visiting the branch must submit proofs of status, identity, tax residency, and addresses.

  • Non-Face-to-Face (Specific Countries): Customers in listed countries (e.g., USA, UK, UAE/GCC, Singapore, Australia) can submit self-attested documents and a copy of a recent overseas bank statement via registered email or post.

  • All Other Cases: If not in a listed country and not visiting in person, third-party attestation is mandatory. This can be done by an SBI Foreign Office, Indian Embassy/High Commission, or a Notary Public.

4. Documentary Requirements

The form categorizes required documents into specific groups:

  • Proof of Status (A): Valid Visa/Work Permit for NRIs; PIO/OCI card or proof of Indian origin for PIOs/OCIs.

  • Proof of Identity (B): Relevant pages of the applicant’s passport.

  • Proof of Tax Residency (C): A document mentioning the Tax Identification Number (TIN) or a certificate of residence issued by a government body.

  • Current Overseas Address (D): Passport pages with the address, a utility bill, or an overseas bank statement.

  • Permanent Address (E): For NRIs, this can be a Voter ID, Aadhaar Card, or Driving License.

5. Regulatory Declarations (FATCA/CRS)

  • The applicant must certify their tax status under the Income-tax Act, 1961 and RBI guidelines.

  • The bank is authorized to report account details to the CBDT or other government agencies to comply with FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and CRS (Common Reporting Standard) obligations.

  • Holders must notify the bank of any changes to their tax residency or personal information within 30 days.
