Google is bridging the gap between its general-purpose AI and its specialized research tool by introducing “Notebooks” to the Gemini app.

Originally reported by 9to5Google, this update represents a significant step in making Gemini a more capable project management and research assistant by integrating it directly with NotebookLM.

What are Gemini Notebooks?

Notebooks are essentially “personal knowledge bases” or projects that live within the Gemini ecosystem. Instead of just having a long list of disconnected chats, users can now group specific conversations, uploaded files, and web sources into a single, organized space.

Key Features and Integration

  • A Dedicated Space: A new “Notebooks” section has been added to the Gemini side panel (located between “My stuff” and “Gems”).

  • Bidirectional Sync: The most powerful aspect of this update is the synergy with NotebookLM. Any notebook created in the Gemini app will appear in NotebookLM and vice-versa.

    • Gemini  NotebookLM: Sources added in Gemini (like class notes or PDF reports) can be used in NotebookLM to create “Cinematic Video Overviews” or complex study guides.

    • NotebookLM  Gemini: Research and sources organized in NotebookLM will be accessible to Gemini, allowing you to ask the chatbot questions based specifically on that curated data.

  • Customizable Memory & Tone: Each notebook features an overflow menu where users can enable/disable “Notebook Memory” and set specific “Instructions” to tell Gemini what tone to use or how to format its responses for that specific project.

  • Easy Organization: Users can now click “Add to notebook” from the overflow menu of any standard Gemini chat to instantly file a conversation into a specific project.

How it Works in Practice

Google suggests that this will be a game-changer for students and professionals. For example, a student could upload several weeks of lecture notes into a notebook. They could then use NotebookLM to generate a video summary of the material, and the next day, use the Gemini app to ask, “Based on my notebook, draft a five-paragraph essay outline for my upcoming exam.”

Availability

The rollout follows a tiered schedule:

  • Now: Available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers on the web.

  • Coming Soon: It will expand to free users, mobile apps (Android and iOS), and additional regions, including Europe, over the coming weeks.

This update effectively turns Gemini into a more structured “home base” for long-term projects, moving away from the ephemeral nature of standard AI chat interfaces.
