How closed-loop cooling works in Microsoft’s datacenters
The efficiency of Microsoft’s closed-loop cooling system stems from its ability to manage heat without consuming water during operations. Key aspects include:
- Direct-to-chip cooling: Water flows directly to computer chips to absorb heat at the source, which is more effective than traditional cooling methods (0:30–0:37).
- Continuous recycling: Once the loop is filled during construction, the system circulates the same water repeatedly for years, eliminating the need to continuously draw or consume fresh water (0:44–0:54).
- Air-cooled chillers: The heat absorbed by the water is transferred to efficient air-cooled chillers, which remove the heat before sending the water back into the loop to restart the cycle (0:37–0:44).

- Initial Fill: The cooling loop is filled with a fixed volume of liquid (often water mixed with propylene glycol) once during construction.
- Chip-Level Absorption: The liquid is piped directly to the hottest components (such as AI GPUs and CPUs), where it absorbs the operating heat without directly exposing water to the environment.
- Heat Dissipation: The heated liquid is pumped to external heat exchangers or radiators. Efficient chillers cool the liquid down, exhausting the heat into the outside air.
- Continuous Recirculation: Because the fluid is sealed, virtually none of it is lost to evaporation, drift, or blowdown. The same liquid recirculates continuously for years. [1, 3, 4]
- Zero-Water Cooling: Microsoft’s newest designs can operate with virtually zero water consumption for cooling, slashing annual water waste by up to 125 million liters per facility compared to older evaporative models.
- Restaurant-Level Usage: Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella highlighted that these closed-loop AI datacenters consume so little water that their annual usage is equivalent to that of a single restaurant.
- Energy Draw: While water evaporation naturally cools systems at a lower energy cost, closed-loop systems trade that water usage for slightly higher chiller energy requirements, making external air temperatures a key factor in facility design. [3, 7, 8, 10]
