Streamline collaboration in Google Docs with Gemini-powered comment workflows

Google introducing Gemini-powered comment workflows in Google Docs to help you quickly understand and respond to collaborator feedback. These new features enable Gemini to read, summarize, and act on comments throughout your document, saving you time and streamlining collaboration.

Synthesize and Q&A comments: Ask Gemini to summarize comment threads, extract key themes, or identify unresolved issues blocking your project. For example, you can say “Summarize all comments from Sarah” or “Based on the comments, what are the unresolved issues?”
Add new comments: Ask Gemini to insert comments on your behalf, such as “Add a comment asking Roberta to verify the stats in the launch readiness section” or “Review this blog post as a copy editor, leaving comments focused on clarity and narrative flow.”
Draft contextually grounded replies: Quickly respond to open comment threads with drafts generated by Gemini. For example, “Reply to the thread confirming that google approved to launch on April 1” or “Respond to Sarah’s question with a link to the latest CSAT deck from my Drive.”
Suggest document edits: Ask Gemini to suggest updates to document content based on reviewer feedback, such as “Rewrite the introduction to address Roberta’s feedback.” Gemini will generate suggested edits for you to review, approve, and seamlessly apply to your document.

You can access these capabilities by submitting queries from the bottom bar or the Gemini side panel in Google Docs. In addition, you may see proactive nudges to summarize comments when opening a new document or automatically generate a reply when clicking into an existing comment thread.

Note: Gemini-powered comment workflows are currently only available for Google Docs users with edit access.

Admins: These features are available by default if Gemini for Workspace in Drive is enabled. Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing access to Gemini features in Google Workspace.

Core Capabilities of Gemini Comment Workflows

Synthesize and Q&A Comments: Gemini can scan lengthy comment threads to extract primary themes, summarize feedback from specific users, or flag unresolved blockers. For example, you can prompt it to “Summarize all comments from Sarah” or “What are the unresolved issues blocking this project?” [1, 4]
Add New Comments on Your Behalf: You can instruct Gemini to leave precise comments across the text or perform structural reviews. Examples include, “Add a comment asking Roberta to verify the stats in this section” or “Review this blog post as a copy editor, leaving comments focused on clarity.” [1, 5]
Draft Contextually Grounded Replies: Instead of typing out responses manually, you can use Gemini to draft replies aligned with your intent and files. How to Access and Use the Features

Open the Tool: Launch your document on Google Docs. [5, 6]
Activate Gemini: Click Ask Gemini found in the bottom bar or open the Gemini side panel. [1, 5]
Use Proactive Nudges: Look out for automatic shortcut prompts. Gemini will proactively nudge you to summarize feedback when you open a heavily commented file, or offer automated draft replies when you click an existing comment thread. [1]
Review and Apply: For generated comments or text changes, review the AI output and click Comment, Reply, or Insert to finalize the action. [5, 7]

Access Level: This feature is strictly available to Google Docs users who hold edit access to the document.
End-User Requirements: Individual users must ensure that Workspace smart features and personalization are turned on within their account settings.
