Create and edit calculated fields in Google Sheets pivot tables with an improved editor
Create and edit calculated fields in Google Sheets pivot tables with an improved editor

Key Enhancements in the New Editor
- Dedicated Dialog Box: Instead of squinting at a tiny inline field in the sidebar, you now write custom calculations in a spacious, dedicated formula window. [1]
- Field Selection Menus: You no longer need to type exact column header names manually. You can select them directly from interactive tabs to instantly insert them into your formula. [1, 2, 3]
- Function Insertion Menus: Easily browse and insert built-in math and statistical functions directly inside the editor. [2, 3]
- Real-Time Validation: The editor checks your syntax live. A green checkmark indicates a valid formula, while a red exclamation mark flags an error so you can fix it before saving. [1, 3]
How to Create or Edit a Calculated Field
- Open the Editor: Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets. Click the Edit button that pops up underneath or next to your pivot table to open the sidebar. [2]
- Add a Field: Look for the Values section in the side panel, click Add, and select Calculated field. [2, 3]
- Build Your Formula: The new structured dialog box will appear.
- Give your field a custom name.
- Use the Columns tab to insert your fields without typing.
- Use the Functions tab to add your logic. [2, 3]
- Choose the Aggregation Type:
- To use basic built-in math (like adding up a single column), leave Summarise by as SUM.
- To use math across multiple columns (e.g.,
=SUM(Revenue) - SUM(Cost)), switch Summarise by to Custom. [3, 4]
- Save: Look for the green syntax validation indicator and click Add or Save at the bottom right to apply the changes to your pivot table. [3]
