Doubled cell limits in Google Sheets now generally available

We’re committed to continuously improving Sheets to ensure it is a powerful, responsive, and scalable spreadsheet tool for your needs. To that end, we’ve increased the cell limit in Google Sheets from up to 10 million cells to up to 20 million cells. This limit applies to new, existing, and imported files.

Whether you are building a new spreadsheet from scratch, expanding an existing workbook, or importing large datasets from Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or CSV files, Google Sheets now supports up to 20 million cells per spreadsheet.

Coming soon, we also plan to increase the file byte size limit for imported spreadsheets, making it easier to bring extensive datasets from other spreadsheet formats directly into Google Sheets.

Getting started

Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
End users: There is no end-user setting for this feature. The expanded limit will apply automatically when creating, expanding, or importing spreadsheets.

Doubled cell limits in Google Sheets now generally available

Google has officially doubled the maximum cell limit in Google Sheets from 10 million to 20 million cells per spreadsheet. According to the Google Workspace Updates Blog, this update entered general availability on September 10, 2026, after a beta testing phase that began earlier in the year. [1, 2, 3]

Key Details of the Update

Scope: The new 20 million-cell ceiling applies to new spreadsheets, existing spreadsheets, and imported files (such as Microsoft Excel .xlsx or .csv files). [1, 2]
Availability: It rolls out automatically across all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts. No administrator switch or manual user adjustment is required. [2, 4]
Rollout Schedule: The implementation is gradual, meaning some users may experience a slight delay before the 20 million capacity becomes active on their specific accounts. [2]
Import Limitations: While the cell count capacity has expanded, Google noted that a separate planned increase to the file byte-size limit for imported spreadsheets is still “coming soon”. Users might still encounter “file too large” errors if a massive data import exceeds existing file size constraints, even if it stays under 20 million cells. [1, 2, 5]

The calculation for spreadsheet capacity remains unchanged: Google Sheets calculates total size by multiplying total rows by total columns across all tabs, including empty cells. [6, 7]
