Connect to Google Meet hardware with room codes now generally available

Google Meet users can now connect to nearby conference room hardware by entering a 5-character room code on their personal device. Building on the recent Connect Room launch that uses proximity-based detection to identify nearby hardware, this update provides a reliable manual fallback when ultrasound is unavailable or disabled. Users will see a “Connect with room code” button on their device’s pre-call screen, which allows them to enter the alphanumeric code displayed directly on the hardware’s screen.

Getting started

Admins: This feature will be ON by default and can be disabled/enabled at the device level. We have updated our admin settings for Connect room and related features, visit the Help Center to learn more.
End users: This feature will be ON by default. Your admin can turn this feature off for devices in your organization.

Google has officially graduated the “Connect with room code” feature out of Early Preview, making it generally available as of September 16, 2026. This feature serves as a manual fallback for the “Connect room” proximity detection, enabling you to link your laptop to nearby Google Meet hardware. [1, 2]

How the Feature Works

When you enter a conference room, your laptop typically uses ultrasound-based proximity detection to find the room automatically. If ultrasound is unavailable or disabled, you can now enter a 5-character alphanumeric room code to manually pair your device. Once connected, the room’s hardware automatically joins the call while your laptop switches into Companion mode to prevent audio feedback. [1, 2]

How to Use a Room Code

Prepare your laptop: Walk into the Google Meet-enabled conference room. Open Google Meet on your laptop, choose your meeting (or enter a nickname/code), and go to the pre-meeting “green room” screen. [3]
Click the button: Look at the right side of your laptop screen and click the “Connect with room code” option. [3]
Locate the code: Look at the top of the main display screen in the physical conference room to find the 5-character room code. (Note: To maintain security, these codes automatically refresh every few minutes). [2, 3]
Enter and confirm: Type the code into your laptop and click Connect room. Finally, you must physically tap “Connect” on the in-room hardware touchscreen to confirm your pairing and prevent accidental connections. [2, 3]
