How to Enable Gemini in Gmail

How to Enable Gemini in Gmail

To enable Gemini in Gmail, the process depends on whether you’re using a personal account or a professional Google Workspace account.

1. Enable for Personal Accounts (Google One AI Premium)

If you are using a personal @gmail.com address with an AI Premium subscription:

  1. Open Gmail on your desktop.

  2. Click the Settings (gear icon) at the top right.

  3. Look for a “Google Workspace Experiments” (or Labs) notification.

  4. Ensure you have opted in to the experiments.

  5. Reload Gmail. You should now see the “Ask Gemini” (star icon) at the top right, next to your profile picture.

2. Enable for Professional Accounts (Google Workspace)

If you are using a custom domain (e.g., satbir@taxheal.com):

  1. Admin Console: Your IT administrator (which might be you) must enable “Gemini for Google Workspace” in the Admin Console under Apps > Google Workspace > Gemini.

  2. In Gmail: Once enabled by the admin, go to Settings > See all settings > General.

  3. Scroll down to “Smart features and personalization” and “Smart features and personalization in other Google products”. Both must be checked.

  4. Click Save Changes at the bottom. The Gemini star icon will appear in the top right corner.

3. Activating the Mobile App (Android/iOS)

Once enabled on the web, it usually syncs to mobile automatically:

  1. Open the Gmail app.

  2. Tap the Gemini star icon located at the top right of your inbox or inside any email thread.

  3. Note: If you don’t see it, ensure your app is updated to the latest 2026 version via the Play Store or App Store.

4. Enabling the Gmail Extension (for gemini.google.com)

To use Gemini outside of Gmail but allow it to “read” your emails (useful for your YouTube research or complex tax queries):

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.

  2. Click Settings (gear icon) at the bottom left.

  3. Select Extensions.

  4. Toggle Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, and Docs) to ON.

Troubleshooting Tip: If the icon is missing even after enabling these settings, check that your account language is set to English (US) or another supported language, as some AI features are rolled out to specific regions first.
