The tribute to Evan Speechly during IPL 2026 was a major emotional milestone for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), marking the retirement of one of the few individuals who had been with the franchise since its very first season in 2008.

The “End of an Era” Tribute

The farewell ceremony took place in early May 2026 at the team hotel in Bengaluru. Although Speechly officially concluded his full-time role as Head Physio in 2025, the franchise flew him back during the 2026 season for a formal recognition of his 18-year legacy.

• Virat Kohli’s Speech: As the longest-serving player, Kohli led the tributes, calling Speechly “one of the OGs.” He highlighted that Speechly was more than just a physio—he was a mentor and a friend who provided emotional support through nearly two decades of the team’s highs and lows.

• The Gift: As a token of appreciation, the team presented him with a limited-edition Seiko Prospex watch, courtesy of their official watch partner.

   

• Director’s Note: Mo Bobat, RCB’s Director of Cricket, emphasized that it was essential to bring Speechly back to acknowledge the vital role he played in shaping the team’s culture behind the scenes.

While the farewell brought a moment of reflection, the team has been performing exceptionally well on the field this season:

• Standings: As of mid-May 2026, RCB is the defending champion (having won in 2025) and is currently sitting 2nd on the points table with 6 wins from 9 matches.

• Leadership: The team is currently being led by Rajat Patidar.

• Key Performers: Virat Kohli has been in vintage form, sitting near the top of the Orange Cap race with an average of over 50. Other standout performers include Phil Salt, Tim David, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
