Arkansas Launches Driver’s Licenses and State IDs in Apple Wallet

Arkansas residents can now officially add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet on their iPhone and Apple Watch. This milestone makes Arkansas one of roughly 15 states to embrace the technology, providing a highly secure, encrypted digital identity companion for day-to-day use. Coordinated by the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) alongside identity technology firm IDEMIA, this initiative modernizes how Arkansans verify their identity.

Where Can You Use Your Apple Wallet ID?

The digital ID is designed to speed up verification processes, but it does not fully replace your physical plastic card. By law, residents must still carry their physical driver’s license while driving. However, the Apple Wallet ID is accepted at several major hubs:
  • TSA Airport Checkpoints: Seamlessly pass through security at participating airports across the United States.
  • University of Arkansas Venues: Present your digital ID at university athletic stadiums and arenas for eligible age-restricted purchases.
  • Participating Local Businesses: A growing number of Arkansas bars, liquor stores, and retailers are deploying specialized digital readers to accept the mobile ID.
  • Select Apps and Websites: Verify your identity or age securely online and within mobile applications.

How to Add Your Arkansas ID to Apple Wallet

Setting up your digital ID takes only a few minutes. Make sure your iPhone is updated to iOS 16.5 or later, and follow these steps:
  1. Open the Wallet App: Tap the “+” (Add) button at the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Select the ID Option: Choose “Driver’s License or State ID” from the menu and select Arkansas.
  3. Scan Your Physical Card: Use your iPhone camera to take clear photos of both the front and back of your physical ID.
  4. Complete Verification Steps: Follow the on-screen prompts to take a series of facial movements (a “selfie” check) to prove it is you.
  5. Submit to the State: The information is securely transmitted to the Arkansas DFA for approval. Once verified, the ID automatically appears in your Apple Wallet and connected Apple Watch.

Privacy and Security Features

A major advantage of using Apple Wallet over showing a physical card is enhanced privacy and control over your personal data.
  • No Need to Hand Over Your Device: To present your ID, simply double-click your power button and hold your device near the reader. You never have to hand your unlocked phone to a stranger or TSA officer. [4, 9]
  • Data Minimization: The system only shares the specific information requested. For example, if a business checks your age, the reader will only see a “Yes/No” confirmation that you are over 21, hiding your exact birthdate, home address, and full name.
  • Biometric Authorization: Every transaction requires explicit user consent via Face ID or Touch ID before any data transfers.
  • Total Anonymity: Neither Apple nor the State of Arkansas receives data about where, when, or to whom you present your digital ID. All transaction history is encrypted and stored solely on your personal device.

Part of a Smarter State Infrastructure

The introduction of Apple Wallet support builds upon the existing Arkansas Mobile ID app. According to Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, this integration is part of a larger push to make government operations work seamlessly for citizens. The DFA is aggressively expanding its digital pipeline through the Official Arkansas DMV Portal, shifting vehicle sales tax payments, license renewals, and plate delivery entirely online to eliminate physical lines at local revenue offices.
