DGFT Notifies New SION to Streamline Mobile Phone Exports

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has notified a new Standard Input Output Norms (SION) specifically for the export of mobile phones. This amendment is aimed at making the Advance Authorisation (AA) process more efficient for mobile phone manufacturers and exporters.

Key Impact of the New SION

  • Streamlined Authorisation: The introduction of a dedicated SION for mobile phones is intended to simplify and expedite the process for obtaining Advance Authorisation. This authorisation allows exporters to import inputs (raw materials and components) duty-free if they are used in products destined for export.
  • Reduced Compliance Burden: By setting clear and pre-determined norms for the quantity and composition of inputs required to manufacture one unit of a mobile phone, the DGFT reduces the need for manufacturers to repeatedly seek ad-hoc or fixed-norm approvals, saving time and administrative effort.
  • Support for Export Schemes: This move directly supports export promotion schemes and is particularly beneficial for manufacturers operating under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, helping them achieve faster turnaround times and scale up production for global markets.
  • Sectoral Benefit: The change is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of the Indian mobile phone manufacturing and export sector.
