Google announces new community investments in Virginia

Our new community investments in Virginia support local jobs and expand energy affordability.

Virginia has been a home for Google for more than a decade, with an office in Reston and data centers in Loudoun and Prince William Counties. Today, we’re deepening our commitment to the Commonwealth with new community investments that will support thousands of local jobs, prepare the next-generation workforce and expand energy affordability.

To prepare Virginians for skilled jobs created by infrastructure growth across the state, we’re funding the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA) to support local electrical apprenticeship training facilities. With this funding, they aim to increase training capacity to support an additional 2,741 apprentices by 2030. This builds on our existing local support and is part of a national commitment from Google.org to prepare over 300,000 skilled tradespeople.

As we responsibly build data centers in Virginia, we have invested in over 500 megawatts of new energy capacity, collaborating with partners to bring more power to the grid. To support energy affordability at the local level, we’re also launching a $15 million Energy Impact Fund. This will help drive down monthly utility bills for Virginians by funding critical community projects like home repairs, weatherization and energy-efficiency upgrades.

Google invests $1 Billion to expand data centers in Loudoun ...

Google’s June 2026 announcement detailing its deepened presence in the Commonwealth focuses on balancing infrastructure growth (like data centers in Loudoun and Prince William Counties and an office in Reston) with localized economic and environmental support.

Here is a breakdown of the key initiatives included in this investment:

1. Skilled Workforce & Trade Apprenticeships

To address the technical needs of infrastructure expansion and support the next generation of workers, Google is funding the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA).

  • The Goal: Increase local training capacity to support an additional 2,741 apprentices by 2030.

  • The Bigger Picture: This is part of a larger national $50 million commitment from Google.org aiming to prepare over 300,000 skilled tradespeople across the United States.

2. Grid Capacity Expansion

As data center footprints grow, stabilizing and contributing to the local power grid is a major priority. Google has invested in over 500 megawatts of new energy capacity in Virginia, collaborating with energy partners to inject more total power back into the grid.

3. The $15 Million Energy Impact Fund

To directly address energy affordability for residents at the local level, Google is launching a dedicated $15 million Energy Impact Fund. This fund is designed to lower monthly utility bills for Virginians by financing vital, hyper-local community programs, including:

  • Critical home repairs

  • Residential weatherization

  • Energy-efficiency upgrades

Are you looking for more details on how to apply for these local apprenticeship programs, or are you interested in how the Energy Impact Fund will be distributed across specific Virginia counties?
