OpenAI rolled out a major feature upgrade for ChatGPT Plus/Pro users in the United States: an official, integrated Personal Finance experience powered by Plaid.

Instead of just answering generic budgeting questions or analyzing text you copy-paste, ChatGPT can now securely link directly to your financial accounts to analyze your real-time cash flow, net worth, and investments.

🛠️ Key Features of the New Experience

If you have access to the preview, you will see a new “Finances” tab in your ChatGPT sidebar. Once you connect your accounts via Plaid (with Intuit integration coming soon), it unlocks several native dashboards and features:

Real-Time Tracking & Dashboards: You can view your net worth over time, asset allocation (stocks, ETFs, crypto, cash), active subscriptions, upcoming bills, and dynamic spending categories.
Contextual Financial Memories: You can give ChatGPT ongoing context about your financial life (e.g., “I’m saving for a down payment on a car next spring” or “My rent is split 50/50 with my partner”). It saves these to its financial memory so you don’t have to re-explain your situation in new chats.
Deep Transaction Analysis: Rather than giving generic personal finance advice, you can ask highly specific questions like, “Based on my last three months of spending, where can I realistically trim $200 to speed up my debt payoff?” or “Analyze my portfolio allocation—am I taking on too much risk for someone trying to retire early?”

❌ What It Cannot Do

To maintain strict security boundaries, the system operates purely on read-only data. ChatGPT cannot:

Move money or pay bills.
Execute stock or crypto trades.
Open, close, or modify any bank or retirement accounts.
File taxes (it can only help you organize tax-related information).

🔒 Security, Privacy, and Data Controls

Because linking a bank account to an AI platform can understandably feel a bit nerve-wracking, OpenAI and Plaid have established specific boundaries:

Data Limits: ChatGPT cannot see or store your full account numbers or login passwords. Plaid acts as an encrypted middleman that passes encrypted balance and transaction history to OpenAI.

Model Training: Your financial chats default to your overall ChatGPT account settings. If you have history/training turned off, your data is not used to train OpenAI’s models.
Temporary Chats: If you want to run a quick analysis on your spending patterns without it living permanently in your history, you can use the Temporary Chat feature.
Access Control: You can disconnect your bank accounts or clear individual financial memories at any time directly through the “Finances” home settings.

If you have a ChatGPT subscription and want to test the preview, you can launch it in two ways:

Via the Sidebar: Open ChatGPT on a web browser or iOS, look at the left sidebar, click More, select Finances, and click Get Started to connect your institutions via Plaid.
Via Chat Prompt: Simply type @Finances, connect my accounts into any chat box to trigger the secure authentication setup.
