The New Google Photos Feature That Tells You What To Wear

Google has just introduced a new AI-powered feature for Google Photos called “Wardrobe,” which essentially acts as a digital version of the iconic closet from the movie Clueless.

Announced in late April 2026, this feature is designed to solve the “nothing to wear” dilemma by using AI to catalog and organize the clothes you already own.

How “Wardrobe” Works

The feature automatically scans your existing photo library to identify pieces of clothing you’ve worn in the past. It then builds a virtual closet without you having to manually scan individual items.

• Digital Cataloging: It sorts your clothes into “tiles” by category, such as Tops, Bottoms, Skirts, Dresses, Footwear, and even Jewelry.

• Virtual Try-On: You can select different items and use a “Try it on” button. The AI then generates a preview of how that specific combination looks on a digital version (avatar) of you.

• Outfit Creation & Sharing: You can mix and match pieces to create new outfits, save them to digital moodboards (e.g., “Summer Wedding” or “Work Looks”), and share them with friends for a second opinion.

• Rediscovery: One of the main goals is to help you “rediscover” items buried in your physical closet that you haven’t worn in a while but are still in your photo history.

Rollout Timeline

The feature is currently in its early launch phase:

• Now (Early May 2026): Available first on the new Motorola Razr 2026 lineup as part of an exclusive partnership.

• Summer 2026: Expected to roll out to the broader Android user base (likely around the time of Google I/O).

   

• Later in 2026: Planned expansion for iOS users.

Requirements

To use it once it hits your device, you generally need to be 16 or older and have Face Grouping enabled in your Google Photos settings, as the AI uses your facial data to create the virtual try-on avatar.
