Ask Maps gets more helpful with food ordering and more

Google Maps' Ask Maps gets more helpful with food ordering

Ask Maps gets more helpful with food ordering and more

From agentic food ordering to real time transit information, the latest Ask Maps improvements make it easier than ever to get more done.

Ask Maps is Google Maps’ biggest transformation in over a decade. By bringing Gemini model capabilities together with the world’s freshest map, we’ve made it easier than ever to get answers to real-world questions.

We’ve been thrilled to see how Ask Maps is helping people use Maps in entirely new ways — from finding a restaurant with great vibes that’s still quiet enough for conversation to mapping out a scenic three-hour motorcycle ride. Building on this, we’re now making Ask Maps even more helpful with new agentic capabilities, real-time transit information, Personal Intelligence, and conversational contributions so you can get more done. It’s also rolling out in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, along with over 150 countries and territories in English.

Order food, find the perfect hotel, and discover events.

Ask Maps can now handle complex, multi-step tasks for you using new agentic capabilities. If you want to order takeout before leaving the office, just ask Maps to “order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home.” It’ll find open restaurants along your route that serve what you’re craving and can even consider things like your saved places or specific dietary needs. Once you select a restaurant, Ask Maps can automatically add the dish you’re looking for directly to your cart so you can easily review and complete your order. Food ordering is rolling out now with partners like Square and Toast, with Uber Eats coming soon. We’ll continue to evolve these experiences as we co-develop the Universal Commerce Protocol for Food with partners.

With Ask Maps, you can also quickly discover the latest information about hotels and local events. Ask for what you need: “For next week’s conference in downtown Miami, find me a decently priced, top-rated hotel with an artsy vibe, within walking distance from a gym and restaurants.” Ask Maps compares real-time prices and checks availability for you so you can find the right spot. And if you need ideas for what to do nearby, Ask Maps will show you everything from concerts to comedy shows, complete with links for tickets.

Get personalized answers and resume past conversations.

With Personal Intelligence, you can choose to securely connect Ask Maps to Gmail, and soon other apps like Calendar. Ask Maps automatically factors in your upcoming flight or dinner reservations, giving you relevant suggestions without you having to explain your existing plans. For example, if you’re traveling, try asking: “Give me ideas on how to spend a few hours near the hotel before my flight tomorrow.” You’ll see nearby recommendations based on your hotel reservation in Gmail — along with tips for getting to the airport afterwards, like what time to leave.

With Personal Intelligence in Ask Maps, you’re in control — connecting to your Gmail is off by default and you decide if you want to connect. Personal Intelligence is built with privacy in mind, and you can learn more about our approach here.

If your history settings are turned on, Ask Maps also remembers past conversations so you can pick up where you left off. Simply ask, “Remind me, what activities did you suggest for my trip to Seattle?” Maps will instantly pull up your previous ideas so you don’t have to start planning from scratch.

Get trusted, real-time transit information instantly.

Ask Maps already gives you helpful, real-time information — like what traffic to expect on your morning commute or if there’s construction or an accident along the way. You can even check how busy a shop or restaurant is before you head out so you can avoid waiting in long lines. Now, we’re bringing these live updates to transit. A new transit widget right in Ask Maps keeps you informed about up-to-the-minute delays for your bus, train, subway, or ferry ride. So if you ask, “Is there a ferry to get to Taronga Zoo with views of the Opera House?” you’ll see all of your options at a glance on a virtual departure board. If a ferry is running late, the wait adjusts in real-time — updating minute by minute — so you know exactly when to head to the dock.

Tell Maps about updates and share tips conversationally

Insights from over 500 million contributors play a big role in keeping Maps fresh and helpful, and now we’re making it simpler to share updates. You can suggest edits conversationally, right from Ask Maps and the Contribute tab. You can even upload a photo of a storefront sign — Maps will detect the new hours from the image, and ask you to confirm before submitting the suggestion for you. As always, Maps’ built-in protection systems review suggested edits for accuracy, and won’t post suggestions that violate our policies. It’s also easy to tell Maps about an insider tip — just say something like “more parking is available behind the building,” and Ask Maps will surface this helpful information to others in the community.

The live transit widget, more personalized responses, and remembering past conversations in Ask Maps are rolling out now everywhere Ask Maps is available. Food ordering, discovering hotels and events, and conversational contributions are rolling out now in the U.S., with more countries to come over time. With these updates, we hope Ask Maps makes navigating your day just a little easier.

Google Maps' Ask Maps gets more helpful with food ordering
Google Maps has transformed its “Ask Maps” conversational assistant into an agentic AI powerhouse powered by Gemini. Moving beyond simple location discovery, the tool can now perform complex, multi-step consumer tasks and transactions natively through simple text or voice commands. [1, 2, 3]
The core upgrades rolled out in the August 2026 update include:

🍔 Automated Food Ordering

  • Natural Prompts: You can ask highly specific requests like “Order spicy pad kee mao for pickup on my way home”. [4]
  • Seamless Checkout: Ask Maps scans route-compatible restaurants, factors in your dietary preferences, and populates your digital cart directly inside the app. [2, 5]
  • Partner Integrations: Orders are handled smoothly via partnerships with Square, Toast, and Uber Eats. (Note: Food ordering, hotel booking, and event ticketing are currently exclusive to US users). [6, 7, 8]

🏨 Travel & Event Coordination

  • Smart Bookings: You can now compare real-time hotel pricing and live inventory, or discover and purchase nearby event tickets directly through a conversational thread. [8, 9]
  • Persistent Conversations: The app now remembers your previous chats, allowing you to pause and resume multi-step trip planning without restarting from scratch. [8, 10]

🔒 “Personal Intelligence” & Contextual Awareness

  • App Synchronization: You can securely connect Ask Maps to your Gmail and Google Calendar.
  • Tailored Planning: Once linked, the AI cross-references your current schedule, flight times, and hotel reservations to make sure new recommendations never conflict with existing plans.
  • Privacy First: This feature is strictly disabled by default, giving you full control over when to turn it on. [1, 7, 8, 11, 12]

🚆 Minute-by-Minute Transit Updates

  • Live Delay Tracking: A new real-time transit widget tracks specific delays for buses, trains, subways, and ferries.
  • Global Rollout: While transactional features are US-first, the live transit widget and Personal Intelligence features are launching globally, extending to over 150 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico. [7, 8, 10, 11, 13]
