Use Sheets canvas to visualize data in custom, interactive mini-apps

Google excited to launch Sheets canvas, a new Gemini-powered capability that transforms your spreadsheets into custom, interactive, read-write applications using simple natural language prompts. It acts as a dynamic visualization layered directly on top of your spreadsheet data, allowing you and your team to work in layouts that best fit your workflows.

Whether you need to coordinate cross-functional deliverables or present core insights from dense data to an executive team, Sheets canvas can deliver the visual tool for the job. Key capabilities include:

  • End-to-end creation: Build an advanced visualization with a single natural language prompt without requiring coding, formulas, or third-party tools.
  • Fully read-write: Changes made in the canvas, such as dragging task cards or adding new entries, instantly update your source sheet. Likewise, any updates to the source sheet reflect in your canvas in real time.
  • Flexible adjustments: Continue to polish and refine your Sheets canvas by prompting Gemini to make edits to layout, design, functionality, and more.
  • Familiar sharing tools: Because Sheets canvas is built directly inside Google Sheets, it inherits the same sharing settings as your spreadsheet, making it effortless to collaborate in real time.
For example, if you’re a financial analyst working out of a budget spreadsheet, you can ask Gemini to “Build an interactive dashboard that helps me analyze how different cost drivers impact a quarterly budget.” If you’re an operations lead overseeing logistics, you can simply prompt Gemini to “Create a custom tracker to visualize regional field assignments.”
Users can build a wide variety of applications with Sheets canvas. Here are just a few examples:
Kanban board: Group tasks by workflow stage, and drag and drop cards to update progress in real time
Dashboard: Create a financial forecasting model with dynamic scenario planning
Whiteboard: Conduct a virtual brainstorming session with sticky notes
Note: This feature is currently only available on the web to accounts with language set to English.

Getting started

  • Admins: This feature will be available by default to users with Gemini in Sheets enabled. Use our Help Center to learn more about managing access to Gemini features in Workspace services.
  • End users: You must have Workspace smart features enabled to take advantage of these features. Eligible users will see the Gemini icon in the Sheets side panel. Simply describe the spreadsheet or edit you need to begin collaborating. Visit the Help Center to learn more about creating a Sheets canvas.

Rollout pace

  • Rapid Release domains: Extended rollout (potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility) starting on August 10, 2026
  • Scheduled Release domains: Gradual rollout (up to 15 days for feature visibility) starting on August 31, 2026

Availability

  • Business: Business Standard and Plus
  • Enterprise: Enterprise Standard and Plus
  • Consumer: Google AI Pro and Ultra Education
  • Add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education AI Add-ons: AI Expanded Access
Note: Creating and editing Sheets canvases is subject to per-user usage limits. See the Help Center for more information.

Sheets canvas is a Gemini-powered feature that instantly transforms spreadsheet grids into fully interactive, read-write mini-applications using natural language prompts. It provides a dynamic visual layer over row-and-column data, allowing users to build and modify software-like tools directly inside Google Sheets without writing code or formulas. [1, 2]

Key Capabilities

  • No-Code Creation: Build complex interfaces using single natural language instructions while Gemini manages the underlying logic.
  • Two-Way Real-Time Syncing: The system functions as a dual-directional data layer. Drags, drops, or card updates on the Canvas instantly refresh the source cells, and structural additions to the raw spreadsheet reflect back on the Canvas interface.
  • Iterative Design Overlays: Refine visual look, logic, UI elements, or toggles by feeding follow-up refinement requests to Gemini.
  • Native Workspace Permissions: Inherits file sharing controls directly from Google Sheets to enable cross-team real-time access. [1, 2, 3]

Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

To create a custom interactive interface using your dataset, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Spreadsheet: Navigate to your document containing organized columns and headers (e.g., Task Name, Status, Priority, Due Date). [4, 5, 6, 7]
  2. Launch the Canvas Workspace:
    • Click the Canvas Icon located at the bottom-left of the window next to your sheet tab bar, or
    • Go to the top navigation bar and select Insert → Create a canvas. [4, 5, 8]

  3. Prompt Gemini: The Gemini side panel will slide open with the Canvas tool selected. Input a specific descriptive command.
    • Example Prompt: "Convert this task list into an interactive Kanban board grouped by workflow status columns." [1, 4, 8, 9]

  4. Refine the Interface: Use additional natural language phrases to style or add features to the preview application.
    • Example Customization: "Add a high-priority metrics banner at the top and include a toggle for dark mode." [1, 3, 4, 9, 10]

Practical Use Cases

Mini-App Type Canvas Functionality Underlying Sheet Effect
Kanban Boards Drag and drop tasks across production stages (e.g., Discovery, Design, Submissions). Automatically updates the text value in the designated “Status” data column.
Interactive Dashboards Toggle parameters, click dynamic filters, analyze heat maps, or test forecasting scenarios. Aggregates and filters formulas without changing the fundamental dataset structures.
Study & Event Trackers Gamified check-boxes, calendar gallery views, or visual charts for assignments or seating arrangements. Logs timestamps, marks binary check variables, or adjusts structural indices.

Availability and Prerequisites

  • Account Types: Available to Google Workspace users with Gemini enabled (Business, Enterprise, Education, and Google One AI Premium subscribers). [1, 2]
  • Language & Platform: Limited to web browsers with account display configurations set to English. [1]
  • Rollout Timeline: Rapid Release system deployment began August 10, 2026. Scheduled Release domain distribution initiates August 31, 2026. [1]

If you want to build a specific app, tell me:

  • What type of data is in your spreadsheet?
  • What layout do you want to build (Kanban, dashboard, tracker)?
