Expanding AI educator training to new countries

The Google AI Educator Series is expanding to five new countries: Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and sub-Saharan Africa. Here’s how teachers are already using it around the globe.

Teachers around the world strive to find better ways to overcome challenges and meet each students’ unique needs, and many have discovered how AI can become a powerful assistant in this effort.

That’s why we created the Google AI Educator Series (GES): a no-cost, on-demand training designed to give educators practical AI skills they can use immediately and that fits into their busy schedule.

We first launched GES in the U.S earlier this year, and later expanded to India, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and the U.K & Ireland. In the coming months, we’re bringing GES to Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Australia, and sub-Saharan Africa.

A look at GES from teachers around the world

Here is a look at how educators around the world are turning their training into practical applications that save time, make lessons more engaging, and support student learning:

  • India: Teachers are using Gemini and Gemini Notebook to turn complex topics into comic strips, podcasts & infographics – making learning more accessible and engaging. Following September sessions that trained 80,000 educators, we’re bringing GES to all Indian educators with self-paced online modules. Aligned with National Education Policy 2020, the training is available in English & six local languages — Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Assamese, Odia, Punjabi — with more coming next year.
  • Philippines: Educators are using Gemini to simulate complex market scenarios in economics classes and more, all to free up time for direct student guidance. To support this progress, we’ve partnered with the Philippine Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, and Technical Skills Development Authority to bring AI training to over one million educators across the country. Building on this momentum, the Philippine Department of Education recently issued an official memorandum endorsing GES to all teaching and non-teaching staff nationwide.
  • Malaysia: Following the official launch of GES at BETT Asia, Malaysian teachers report saving three to five hours of prep time on curricula, assessments, and visual aids per topic, allowing them to focus on interactive, student-centered learning. As a next step, we are launching “train-the-trainer” bootcamps alongside local partners to expand GES training to private school educators, pre-service teachers, and university faculty nationwide.
  • United Kingdom: In the U.K., teachers are using tools like Gemini Notebook to develop learners’ creative writing skills and create engaging lesson plans and visuals. Through the launch of GES, all 650,000 teachers can receive digital literacy training by joining virtual or in-person events around the UK and Ireland. We are also hosting “train the trainer” workshops in the Google London office in November.
  • Korea: In partnership with Seoul National University of Education (SNUE), GES in Korea is aligned with the 2022 Revised Curriculum and the Ministry of Education’s Teacher AI/Digital Education Competency Framework. Teachers are using Gemini and Gemini Notebook to design inquiry-based lessons and assessments while streamlining administrative tasks like parent communications and data analysis.

New November sessions

To ensure GES lessons are truly helpful, we update and create new content monthly in response to feedback from educators. Our November modules go live on November 4th in the U.S. focused on helping educators save time where they tell us they need it most.

Here’s what’s coming:

  • Build interactive assessments: Learn how to use Gemini to build practice tests and interactive web assessments — like exit tickets with instant feedback and hints for incorrect answers — to help students prepare for assessments like state exams..
  • Guide students through game-based learning: Guide students through interactive, game-based learning experiences that demonstrate the importance of data accuracy, model performance, and human oversight.
  • Strengthen academic assignments: Use Gemini to learn how to spot questions that can lead to taking shortcuts, helping faculty strengthen assignments and encourage deeper student critical thinking.

Some countries are prioritizing AI workforce preparation through curriculum and job training
Google has announced the expansion of its free, self-paced Google AI Educator Series (GES) to five new regions: Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Australia, and sub-Saharan Africa. [1, 2]
Initially launched in the United States, the on-demand program provides practical AI training tailored to busy educator schedules. The initiative focuses on building essential AI literacy, allowing teachers to co-design interactive lesson plans, generate customized learning assessments, and optimize routine administrative workflows using tools like Gemini and NotebookLM. [1, 2, 3]
The Global Footprint & Expansion Strategy
The global rollout relies heavily on partnering with national governments, localized ministries, and academic institutions to scale and tailor delivery:

Region Existing / Expansion Status Implementation Strategy & Impact
United States Existing First to launch; rolling out target updates like November modules for AI-oversight games and shortcut-resistant assignment design.
India Existing Tailored to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Google expanded localized modules to states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Sikkim, training over 90,000 educators in English and 6 regional languages.
Philippines Existing Partnered with the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to reach over 1 million teaching and non-teaching staff nationwide.
South Korea Existing Aligned directly with the 2022 Revised Curriculum and the Ministry of Education’s Digital Competency Framework via Seoul National University of Education.
United Kingdom & Ireland Existing Reaching 650,000 teachers through a blend of virtual events, in-person training, and London-based “train the trainer” workshops.
Malaysia Existing Active program deployment across regions.
Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Australia, & sub-Saharan Africa Upcoming Expansion Active course frameworks will be paired with localized delivery pipelines over the coming months to scale AI skill adoption.

Broader Landscape: Complementary AI Educator Initiatives

Google’s standalone expansion coincides with other prominent international pushes to train educators:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Beyond Google’s new standalone track, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), supported by Google and the I Am Angel Foundation, is running a pilot across Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa targeting both students and their teachers. [1]
  • Pan-European Networks: Organizations like Junior Achievement (JA) Europe recently gathered educators from 18 European countries in Montenegro for the “AI-Ready Educators” initiative, focusing on design thinking and micro-teaching strategies. [1]
  • National System Pilots: Outside corporate training frameworks, countries like Estonia are actively cooperating with OpenAI Edu to roll out broad LLM access and research frameworks across hundreds of national schools. [1]
