The Hikawa Grip & Stand was created through an accessibility-first design process that prioritized direct user collaboration over assumptions. Designer Bailey Hikawa developed the accessory by engaging in multiple conversations with over 30 people living with various disabilities to understand their specific needs regarding grip strength and dexterity (0:34–0:39).
Key aspects of the design process and final product include:
- User-Centered Research: Instead of making assumptions about accessibility, Hikawa listened to the actual physical challenges users faced, such as tingling in the fingers, pain, or difficulty holding a phone securely with one hand (0:08–0:21).
- Ergonomic Sculptural Form: The final design features distinct, “wavy triangle” finger grooves. These were specifically shaped to turn the smooth, flat surface of an iPhone into a stable, easy-to-grip object (0:45).
- Adaptive Functionality: The grip acts as an “anti-grip” that allows users to hold their device securely in multiple positions. It also serves as a stand for both portrait and landscape viewing (0:47).
- Material and Aesthetic Choices: Moving away from standard minimalist tech aesthetics, the grip uses soft-touch silicone and bold, vibrant colors. This intentional design choice aims to make the accessory feel proud and visible rather than just a medical or assistive tool (0:50–1:03).
- MagSafe Integration: The grip is designed to snap onto MagSafe-compatible iPhones, ensuring it is both secure and easily removable for the user.

- Ergonomic Shape: The wavy, sculptural design provides multiple resting points for different fingers, reducing muscle fatigue and cramping. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- MagSafe Compatibility: The magnetic attachment allows users to easily snap the grip onto an iPhone or remove it without needing fine motor skills to peel adhesives. [1, 2]
- Dual-Angle Stand: The sculpted shape doubles as a stable kickstand, supporting the phone in both vertical (portrait) and horizontal (landscape) orientations. [1, 2]
- High Visibility Colors: To help with visual impairments, the grip comes in bold, high-contrast colors (Orange Swirl, Speckled Stone, and Glow-in-the-dark Blue). [1, 2]
