Expanding AI transparency in ads

Expanding AI transparency in ads
Google introducing additional features, including a “How this ad was made” panel, to help people easily understand when generative AI was used to create or alter an ad.
As generative AI opens up new ways for businesses large and small to create ads, google introducing additional transparency features across our advertising products. We want to help people better understand the ads they see, while providing advertisers with straightforward tools to navigate evolving industry standards.
Google adding a “How this ad was made” section to the My Ad Center panel, accessible globally by selecting the three-dot menu or info icon on ads across Search, YouTube and Discover. This panel will indicate if an ad was created or edited with AI.
We want to make managing AI disclosures as simple as possible for advertisers. So when they use Google’s generative AI advertising tools to create ads, we’ll automatically add a disclosure to each ad’s My Ad Center panel. And when they create ads elsewhere, google introducing a control so they can easily indicate if they used generative AI. Based on local requirements, a label may also appear directly on the ad, either automatically or when an advertiser uses this control.
These updates build on our ongoing AI transparency work. We already embed imperceptible signals, like SynthID, into outputs from our generative AI tools. And in 2023, we introduced a requirement to disclose synthetic or digitally altered content in election ads.
Our existing ad policies already serve as important safeguards, along with our work to verify advertisers and share who’s behind an ad. We continue to prohibit misleading and deceptive ads, whether created with AI or not, to keep the platform safe for everyone.

How Users Can View Disclosures
- Access Points: Tap the three-dot menu or the information (“i”) icon displayed on any ad across Google Search, YouTube, and Google Discover.
- New Dedicated Panel: Inside the My Ad Center platform, a brand-new section labeled “How this ad was made” appears.
- The Label Details: This panel explicitly states if the digital assets inside the ad were “created or edited with AI”. [1, 7, 8]
Requirements and System Enforcement for Advertisers
- Native Automation: If a marketer builds their campaign natively with Google Ads generative tools, Google’s backend automatically applies the label to the My Ad Center panel on their behalf. [1, 9]
- Third-Party Self-Reporting: For ads crafted on independent software (like Midjourney or DALL-E), Google has deployed an AI label configuration switch inside Google Ads, Display & Video 360, and Merchant Center. Advertisers are expected to manually flag AI utilization. Google explicitly stated it will not independently verify third-party assets. [1, 9, 10, 11]
- On-Ad Overlays: While the standard disclosure sits behind the information panel globally, regions with strict regulatory frameworks—such as the European Union, India, and New York—will feature visible, direct overlays placed right on top of the ad creative itself. [9, 10]
- Watermark Detection: To catch unflagged content, platforms leverage technical standards like C2PA cryptographic credentials and invisible digital watermarks like SynthID to track file history and abnormalities. [10, 12]
The Context and Competitive Landscape
- Meta: Features an automated and manual “About this ad” disclosure system across Facebook and Instagram that breaks down when generative features modify background environments or text variations.
- TikTok: Requires prominent “AI-generated” video overlays directly over the visual interface to isolate automated content and combat bot spam.
- Safeguard Continuity: Despite the new tags, platforms reiterate that baseline advertising guidelines remain unchanged. Deceptive, unsafe, or malicious ad claims are flatly prohibited under core platform safety rules, regardless of whether AI was used to draft them. [1, 3, 10, 17]
