You’ll continue to have access to all the features that you use and love. This change will give you more choice over how you want to spend your limits and manage your tasks. And since limits refresh every five hours rather than daily, you can now keep working throughout the day.

To give you more control over your compute budget, your overall usage limit will factor in prompt complexity, chat length, number of sources, and the features you use. Your notebook will help you keep track of your usage and suggest alternative outputs if your first choice surpasses your limit. If you reach your limit, you can defer generating outputs like Video Overviews or Slide Decks for later. They will generate automatically and you can set up notifications so you know the moment they’re ready.

These updates are rolling out to consumer accounts on web and mobile starting on September 2.

Starting September 2, 2026, the platform officially ditched its rigid daily caps—such as a fixed number of audio overviews or quizzes per day—in favor of a shared, dynamic allocation system that scales according to actual compute consumption. Compute-Based Tracking: Instead of counting button clicks or generations, your allowance factors in prompt complexity, chat length, the number of sources uploaded, and the specific features you utilize. Simple questions consume significantly less budget than deep multi-document analyses. [1, 3, 6]
5-Hour Reset Window: Rather than waiting a full 24 hours for a daily refresh, your quota now refreshes every 5 hours. This shift allows users who work in intense bursts to resume creating much faster throughout the day. [2, 3, 4, 7]
Deferred Generation (“Generate Later”): If you attempt to initiate a resource-heavy task like a Video Overview or a Slide Deck but lack the necessary compute budget, you can defer the task. Gemini Notebook will automatically queue, generate, and notify you when the asset is ready after your limit refreshes. [1, 8]
Predictive Cost & Status Indicators: The user interface now displays a status bar showing your remaining quota and the exact time it will reset. Furthermore, a visual preview bar at the bottom of the Studio tool estimates the “compute cost” of a generation before you run it. [7, 8]
