Google CEO Sundar Pichai passes on artificial intelligence in Stanford commencement address

Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivered the 135th Commencement Address at Stanford University’s Stanford Stadium on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Returning to his alma mater (where he earned his M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering in 1995), Pichai bypassed his usual talking points on Artificial Intelligence. Instead, he leaned into personal anecdotes, humor, and a concept he called “California optimism.”

The core thesis of his speech was that “very few moments in life are make or break,” and he provided graduates with three “timeless, technology-agnostic filters” to guide their lives.

1. Filter One: Choose Optimism

Pichai recalled moving from Chennai to California and finding the landscape quite different from what he expected.

“If you’re not from here, California is advertised as being really lush and green. But when I looked out the window, it was more… brown. I guess I said this out loud… My host, Mrs. Jane Earl, gently corrected me. ‘We prefer to call it golden,’ she said. And that’s exactly what I mean by choosing optimism. It’s about reframing for the positive: Where I saw brown, she saw golden.”

He noted that adopting this framework helped him handle major life pivots, such as realizing he needed to enter the workforce early rather than pursuing the PhD path he originally planned.

2. Filter Two: Gravitate Towards Working on Hard Things

Pichai debunked the idea that career trajectories are an immediate, linear success, admitting that even a decade after leaving Stanford, he still felt like he hadn’t fully found his footing until he applied to Google.

He cited the early days of building Google Chrome in 2008 as an example of tackling an “impossible problem.” When critics and industry executives dismissed the effort, he used that pushback to rally his team.

  • The Takeaway: Working on hard things naturally attracts other passionate, optimistic people. Pichai advised: “When you have the choice to work on something hard — say yes.”

3. Filter Three: When All Else is Equal, Do What Excites You

Recalling his first time walking into Sweet Hall in 1993, Pichai described seeing rows of computers that he could use at any time—a stark contrast to his childhood in India, where he had limited computer access.

  • Watching the early internet build up around him, he recognized it as a “fundamental enabler of human progress.”

  • Choosing projects that genuinely excited him—from the core browser to later leading Android and Chromebooks—ultimately defined his career.

The “Vegas Road Trip” Anecdote

To emphasize that life is not just a rigid series of high-stakes tests, Pichai shared a story about a classmate named Pat who drove a white Honda Prelude convertible. On a Wednesday winter morning during his first quarter, Pat asked if he wanted to skip class and drive to Las Vegas. Pichai, a high achiever who had never skipped a class or taken a road trip, said yes.

While driving through the mountains, it began to snow—the first time Pichai had ever seen snow in his life. They reached Vegas, he won $15 playing blackjack, and they turned back.

  • The Lesson: “No one seemed to notice that we had missed class. For the first time, I realized the world won’t end if I relaxed a little… Your first job out of college? The city you move to next? Whether to take that road trip? While those moments add texture to your journey, they rarely determine the course of your life.”

The Backdrop of the Event

The ceremony was heavily impacted by campus activism. As Pichai took the stage to speak to the 20,000 attendees (including 3,600 graduating students), a planned protest took place.
