Streamlining rubric generation in Google Classroom with Gemini

Streamlining rubric generation in Google Classroom with Gemini

To make it easier to create rubrics and grade in Google Classroom, educators can now instantly generate a new Classroom-ready rubric during their assignment creation workflow, using context from their assignment.

With this update, there will now be multiple ways to create and use rubrics in Classroom:

  • [New] Draft relevant Classroom rubrics from the assignment creation page: Within the “Rubrics” section, generate a new Classroom-ready rubric with help from Gemini based on their assignment. Educators can review and edit the proposed rubric criteria before adding it to the assignment, saving valuable prep time.
  • Convert existing rubrics files from the assignment creation page: Within the “Rubrics” section, educators can select an existing rubric they have and instantly convert it to a Classroom-ready rubric.
  • Create rubric files from the Gemini tab: When planning their lessons, educators can collaborate with Gemini to draft a rubric based on information that they provide. They can then export the rubric to Sheets or Docs before attaching it to their class.

Note: This feature is only available for users over age 18.

Streamline grading setup by instantly generating custom rubrics directly within the assignment creation workflow.

Streamlining rubric generation in Google Classroom with Gemini

Google Classroom features a seamless integration with Gemini that allows educators to instantly generate, convert, and customize grading rubrics directly within their assignment workflow. This automated process reduces manual data entry, helps maintain consistent grading standards, and saves valuable lesson preparation time. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

🛠️ Core Ways to Generate Rubrics with Gemini

Educators can utilize Gemini in three primary ways depending on their existing resources: [1, 3, 6]
  • Directly From the Assignment Page: Create a new rubric instantly during the assignment setup. Gemini reads the context of your instructions to draft tailored evaluation criteria. [1]
  • Convert Existing Files & Images: Upload a legacy document or a photo of a physical rubric (such as .jpeg or .png files). Gemini will automatically extract and structure the data into an interactive Classroom format. [2]
  • Via the Dedicated Gemini Tab: Collaborate interactively with the Gemini AI assistant to build complex assessment parameters from scratch, then export them. [1]

📋 Step-by-Step: Generating a Rubric from an Assignment

To build a fresh rubric inside your active assignment workflow: [1]
  1. Open the assignment creation window in Google Classroom.
  2. Navigate to the Rubrics section on the right-hand options panel.
  3. Select the option to generate a rubric with Gemini.
  4. Define your target grade level and the number of desired performance tiers (e.g., a 4-point scale).
  5. Prompt the tool by outlining the specific knowledge or skills you intend to assess.
  6. Click “Generate Criteria” to let Gemini draft the grading grid.
  7. Review the AI suggestions, make manual edits to the descriptions, and attach it to the assignment. [1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9]

🔄 Converting Legacy Files and Physical Documents

If you have pre-existing scoring frameworks that you want to digitize: [2]
  1. Click on the Rubrics menu inside your assignment draft.
  2. Choose “Convert from file” or upload an image from your device or Google Drive.
  3. Allow Gemini to process the text and map it into the interactive matrix rows and columns.
  4. Adjust the assigned point scales before finalizing and saving. [2, 3, 10]

📥 Exporting and Reusing Rubrics

For multi-class alignment or advanced adjustments, rubrics built in the standalone Gemini tab can be exported smoothly. You can export the generated table directly to Google Docs for formatting or Google Sheets for structured grading. Once exported to Sheets, the file can be easily imported into any future Google Classroom assignments with a single click. [1, 7, 9, 10]
