Use custom web fonts in Google Sheets charts

Google Sheets now supports the full Google Fonts web font library directly within charts. Users can now select “More fonts” from any font dropdown inside the chart editor sidebar to search, add, and apply custom web fonts across key chart text elements. This expanded font support is available for:

  • Chart titles and subtitles
  • Horizontal and vertical axis titles and labels
  • Data labels
  • Legend text

Additionally, this launch enhances import and export compatibility with Microsoft Excel to preserve a wider range of fonts across both platforms. Previously, importing Excel files containing charts with custom fonts would result in missing or fallback font substitutions. Now, custom fonts present in both platforms are seamlessly preserved during file import and export, ensuring visual consistency and brand fidelity when moving spreadsheets between Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.

Sparklines in Google Sheets: A Simple Guide to Rich Data Visualisation

Google Sheets officially supports the full Google Fonts web font library directly within charts. You can now search for, add, and apply custom web fonts to specific chart elements instead of being restricted to standard default options. [1, 2]

How to Add and Use Custom Fonts in Charts

  1. Open the Chart Editor: Double-click on your chart in Google Sheets (or click the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the chart and select Edit chart).
  2. Select the Chart Element: In the sidebar that appears, click the Customize tab. Navigate to the text element you want to change (e.g., Chart & axis titles, Series, or Legend).
  3. Open the Font Dropdown: Click on the current font selection dropdown menu for that element.
  4. Choose “More Fonts”: Select “More fonts” at the top of the dropdown menu. [1, 2]
  5. Search and Add: A window will open showcasing the Google Fonts library. Search for the custom font you want, click on it to add it to your saved list, and hit OK. [3, 4, 5]
  6. Apply the Font: The newly added font will now appear in your chart editor’s font list, ready to be applied. [5, 6]

Supported Chart Elements

You can customize the typography across all key visual areas of your graph, including:

  • Chart titles and subtitles
  • Horizontal and vertical axis titles and labels
  • Data labels placed directly on bars, lines, or points
  • Legend text [1]

Microsoft Excel Compatibility

This feature also improves file sharing between platforms. When you import or export Microsoft Excel files containing charts with custom fonts, Google Sheets will seamlessly preserve the styling across both platforms as long as the font exists in both libraries. This prevents the chart text from defaulting to fallback fonts like Arial. [1]
(Note: While you can access the vast library of Google Fonts, Google Sheets still does not support uploading private, localized font files—such as .TTF or .OTF files from your computer’s hard drive—directly to a spreadsheet.) [7, 8]
